NIT "snubbers"
The following teams turned down the NIT, although there may be some I missed; Pitt, OU, St. Johns, Ole Miss, Syracuse, Washington, Indiana, and Memphis (they not in the P5 or Big East).
Apparently, the NIT changed their selection criteria due to pressure from the "Power" schools. Don't take conference champions, but instead give automatic bids to the 9th and 10th (turned out be 11th) best teams in the SEC, etc. Then they were "snubbed" by schools from the conferences who pushed for this change. How embarrassing for the tradition-laden NIT. Conference champions would have been elated to go. Big schools don't give a crap. Will they go back to the old format? No, because the power/money schools won't allow it.
Interestingly, UNC turned down NIT last year. I remember Louisville turning it down a few years ago. It would happen occasionally, but was a pretty rare occurrence. It's ironic that the floodgates opened up this year.

And who can forget the year Arkansas decided to skip it, which very likely kept us out of it too.
