Letting go of a former player turned coach can be done. I just felt it was similar enough to our situation to post. Ex player, a little baggage on the side, unsatisfactory results, etc.

Howard had a horrible year. 8-20 something. And the last two seasons before this year Michigan was barely .500. That's an easy call. Penny on the other hand has always been well beyond .500. Every year he has 20+ wins. Howard is in the stronger conference, but still, not comparable IMO.

Right, and dude straight up punched another coach and rumored to have punched a staff member. Penny has earned at least one more year to "right the ship" IMO.

Right the ship? With what? I haven't heard any chatter about any players he might be in on. Of course it's way premature.

He's had 6. Almost 16 years since the last Sweet 16. I'm ready for a better coach that only works 10 hours a day.

Agreed, that'd def be part of the "righting".

Howard got fired because he sucks as a coach. Not because of the other baggage. Big 10 (or whatever it’s called) is much more difficult conference. I suspect Penny’s overall record might not be much better than Howard’s if he was coaching in Big 10. These former players turned coaches have gigantic egos. They never admit they are failures at coaching and will not voluntarily step down and instead force the school to fire them. Penny apparently does not need the money. He came out of retirement to coach. He was hired because he had several “star” players he was going to bring on board. The biggest star of all played 3 games. Very few of the others did as well as expected. Or possibly they did not develop under him. Who the heck knows. The fact is he has underperformed as a coach if success is defined as getting past 1st round of NCAA. Penny doesn’t need the aggravation. He should pack it in and again start enjoying his retirement.

Agree about Penny. A very disappointing year with all of our talent but he deserves another year. Might be the weirdest Jekyll and Hyde team we have ever had. However, firing a coach after a 22-10 year would scare off any other decent coach. I hope he keeps Stansbury and actually listens to him, although Stansbury may want out of here as fast as possible.

I have no doubt that if Penny punched another coach, had a heart attack, drove away Hunter Dickinson, and missed the tourney two years in a row while going 8-24 that he wouldnt return as our coach the following season.

He's had a much worse run than Penny, however disastrous this season was.

Thing is he probably would only have had about 10 in that Conference..

Right these two situations really aren't close except for the fact that they're both player / alumni.

And Silverfield would have had about two wins.
