RE: Why Do Schools Ditch Iconic Looks?
Still miss the UH football uniforms of the SWC era (we looked and sometimes played like an SEC team), let alone the uniforms of the Phi Slama Jama era in basketball. Why we ever abandoned those, I'll never know.

Marquette's untucked jerseys in the '70s stayed with me.

I'm so glad you included those UMass jerseys. 100% miss those ones.
The only thing I'd like to see happen, if not go back to those, is to have it just spell out Massachusetts on them like the Hockey ones. Might not work as well for Basketball though thanks to no padding widening the chest to fit all that text. Hockey and Football should go that route though.

I suspect some of those changes have some interesting stories, be it from school leadership “power-flexing” (changing it because they can) or booster/fan backlash, to the more mundane, like intricacies with their apparel deals, fashion/style of the time, or fabrics and player comfort. Cost, probably the biggest. Heck, those white UNLV jersies with with the varsity lettering and outlines…old school, but now probably seen as costly due to spacing, materials, etc..

The 1960s logo looks like the product of a temporary UConn/UMass merger where they just threw a Huskie head on a Minuteman body.

Everyone left the hand drawn logos by the end of the 90’s it seemed. The UConn 2002 Husky is a pretty good update if it had to be done. The red tongue was a great touch.

You asked why? Apparel contracts. Those companies believe you generate more sales by change because fans don't want to be seen in out of date jerseys.
It's stupid, but like everything else it is money related.

Yep. Sell new jerseys.
The Houston Rockets ditched their back-to-back red/yellow uniforms for the blue and white pajama uniforms because blue was easier to sell and everyone already had their Rockets gear. Fortunately, they eventually realized pajamas were not a good seller.

Right, I get that. But Alabama and Auburn football for example, haven’t changed for years (or ever) as far as I know.
I understand little changes here and there and complete overhauls when you’re not elite, but some of the programs I showcased have lost their identity due to changing from something immediately recognizable. Like UMass.
KU from what I understand went to a consistent branding across all their athletics, which includes the current font. I remember they went through a spell of wearing navy in football while the rest of the teams were wearing royal blue.

Schools ditch iconic looks in favor of a bland souless corporate look, just like the NBA does.

The 1959 dog looks like he got caught pooping on the carpet.
