I am a graduate of the 80’s and suffered through the dark ages of UC basketball. And when Huggins was hired, I was an early adopter, buying season tickets and attending games when 8,000-9,000 was considered a great crowd.

I was also quick to drop my season tickets when behavioral problems became an issue. I guess I don’t put a basketball game or coach above the school I love or above basic values of common decency, which Huggins disregarded both here and at West Virginia. His scorched earth policy at UC and WVU and his clear lack of accountability for his dangerous actions don’t exactly make him the person you want to invite back for a warm fuzzy.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say again: I actually feel sorry for Huggins. He really is a tortured soul, and when he hopped off to WVU, I genuinely wished him well and hoped he could turn things around, meaning in his personal life. With his behavioral problems, I honestly didn’t think he was long for this world.

Huggins is kind of like an ex - it was good for a while, but it had to end. I’ll be cordial, but no need to invite him over…much less build him a statue.

If we only build statues of perfect people, there would be no statues.

Kids needs role models. Most adults need role models, too. So let's not go down the path of no statues.

You build statues to people who are great at their chosen profession. Other than Paul Brown, Bob Huggins is arguably the greatest coach in the city's history (although I can see an argument for Sparky).

By the way, I'm also in favor of statues of great professors on campus.

Albert Sabin > Bob Huggins X infinity

Not trying to instigate the anti-vax crowd.

This statue business is a slippery slope. Good thing fifty thousand dollars wasn't spent commissioning one of Marge Schott and placing it at the entrance to UC's baseball stadium.

Sometimes it's risky renaming streets for folks still living. Pete Rose Way comes to mind. However, I'm still amazed that our city doesn't have a street renamed for Oscar Robertson. Even UC could do that where University Avenue crosses Jefferson into campus. And I'm not talking about hanging an auxiliary sign above the street name as the city seems to do quite often these days. I mean change the street name permanently in honor of the greatest player in Cincinnati basketball history.

Isn’t there an O’ Varsity Way? Oscar Blvd sounds better.

You're probably too young to remember, but after UC beat tOSU for the national championship in 1962 the stretch of Clifton Ave from McMillan to Ludlow was renamed Avenue of Champions. It was changed back I think in the mid '60's

You are correct. You may also be too young to remember that after UC beat Ohio State for the national championship in 1961, Ohio's Governor, Michael V. DiSalle, pushed a resolution through the Ohio General Assembly designating Ohio State as the #1 team in the nation. True Story. DiSalle was from Toledo and was a graduate of both Georgetown University and the Georgetown University Law School. However, it would seem apparent that he was not too smart.

LOL, if that same scenario were replicated in 2025 I'm sure a similar resolution would be presented on behalf of OSU and it too would pass. OSU still owns the Statehouse.
