RE: 2024 Mid American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
Great win today by KSU vs Toledo! A friend of mine (season ticket holder) was at the game and gave me some updates on some of the players who were injured.

Gillespie - boot is off, but still limping a bit
Moss - crutches and knee brace because of ACL injury
Payton - wrist/hand cast
Bass - 2 fingers taped with splint on 1 hand

Good luck to the boys tomorrow vs BG (STD U)!!!!

Hopefully VCD and Sullinger have enough legs for tomorrow's game.

RE: 2024 Mid American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
What a win. I caught most of the second half at lunch and I'm my office with the door closed. Davis has become a force. Bekelja made some monster hustle plays. There was one play that was hard to see exactly what happened, but it looked like he grabbed an offensive board, got knocked down (no call), the. From his back swiped the UT players dribble and flipped it back to a teammate.

In today's era of college basketball the amount of minutes we had played by players not on the team last year was very rare. 3 by Freeman and 2 by Hunter. Every other minute was someone on the team last year.

Didn’t Charlie Coles’ Miami team come from an 8 seed one year? I seem to remember that.

(03-14-2024 04:30 PM)cleveland Wrote:  I would not call this a 'choke job' by Toledo since it sort of trashes the job Kent State did, players and coaches.

1) The gameplan was solid, and EXACTLY the same Kent used to beat UT three times last season. Patient offense-tough physical defense.

2) Yes, Toledo missed 10 FTs (that's 10 pts) but Sullinger was 0-7 on threes. It evens out. If he makes 3-threes that's nine points. But he missed 7, that's 21 friggin points.

3) Call me crazy but if Kent had lost this game I don't know what I would have said about Gio. And I'm not talking about his missed FTs. The potential play of the game (up 59-53 - off a timeout - with :41 to play) was Gio's sloppy off-target inbounds pass to a wide-open Sullinger off a back-cut for a clear layup, became a contested shot at the rim by a UT defender who had time to recover and block the shot. GREAT PLAY-CALL by Sendy. Brutal execution.

UT went on to score (59-55) and immediately fouled Kent's worst FT shooter (Hornbeak) who made the first but missed the second. But Kent's Bejelka then got the loose ball rebound and Sullinger closed the game out at the line. Near disaster averted.

It wasn’t a great pass but Sullinger just needed to dribble it out and run some clock. He didn’t have to force the shot.

It was a slow grind it out game. Had I been watching Illinois vs. Minnesota on TV and it was that type of game I wouldn’t have lasted a half. But that’s what we needed to do so more power to us.

Big shout out to Rob Polinksy and the entire broadcast crew. I felt like I was in the arena as I listened to the call from the Joe Tait Perch on the radio. It's nice to have Kent State represented by a play by play man who is passionate about the home team while respecting the game and the opponent at the same time. Great job by all involved on the radio end.

burden,
Your comment disappoints me. Games like that are a thing a beauty.

And also, was Kent State doubling down in the post today? It sure sounded like it. Unfortunately, the highlights are all offense.

GO FLASHES!

Davis has really impressed me this year. In addition to his massive improvement in efficiency over his first 3 years, I think the most impressive part is it seems like he keeps getting better despite clearly becoming a bigger part of the opponents scouting reports.

fallsdog, from Cleveland.com:

Secret traps were also planted within the scheme. Any time a Rocket player crossed inside the paint, multiple Golden Flashes would clog their path and simulate a trap.

This one is extra sweet as that Toledo has always been a colossal dbag! In 09 when he was at Green Bay they stole a game at the MACC when old buddy Bo Boriski blew a call handing them the game. Dbag ran by the chair backs pointing and taunting. Classless. Karma!

I remember that one well. That ball was so far out of bounds!!!!

Ah. Memories.

Speaking of, Coach Dambrot and company are on tv against Dayton tonight. Could be a nice nightcap.

Semis are set in the MAC

(8) Kent State vs. (5) Bowling Green
(2) Akron vs. (3) Ohio University

Both games will broadcast on CBS Sports with KSU tipping at 5pm.

Go Flashes!!

That's a interesting way to describe help defense.

Possibly. But as mentioned I couldn't see the game so I didn't see what all they were doing on defense and in what situations. In my decades I've seen lots of different defensive tactics. The oddest was 40 years ago when I saw a team use a "triangle and two" zone, with two on either side of the foul line, two double-teaming the low post player at all times, and one in the lane triple-teaming the opponent's low post player when he had the ball.

VCD got screwed. Only being honorable mention was ridiculous.

Oh, thank my lucky stars, CBSSN means no Reghi. Absolutely guaranteed the play-by-play will be infinitely better, because anyone is better than the worst. We could go into excruciating detail about why he’s so bad, but I assume most of you get it. And he wasn’t always as bad as he’s become. Actually, he did a good job on MAC games once, a long time ago.

That was a great call by Reghi! Cut him some slack gang..he’s 70 years old and had probably lost some of his fastball. What’s more, he’s a very nice guy. This is an ESPN+ broadcast for Pete”s sake. Remember how bad most schools telecast were of those games this past 2-3 months?

As for the play…Rod flushing that one has to be a top 3-4 all-time KSU hoops finishes. Thanks for digging this one up Fallsdog!04-cheers

RE: 2024 Mid American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
As for tonight's semi-final matchup against the number five seed from Bowling Green State University...

I was somewhat relieved to see that Bowling Green only played 8 guys last night. One of them only logged 7 minutes. It was basically the same deal in their season finale vs. Ball State. Only difference was the eighth guy played 4 minutes. The Falcons did play 8 in the other March games against WMU and OU. So my fear that BG is going to run Kent State into the ground with depth has subsided some.

The pace of the action is going to be interesting tonight. What tempo will the Flashes prefer to play? Can KSU stay away from foul trouble? Perhaps some zone??

6'4 junior Marcus Hill is the guy KSU has gotta slow down. He averages over 20 points per game and earned 1st Team All Conference Honors. His running mate, Rashuan Agee, is a 2nd Teamer who averages a double double.

The task will be tall tonight, there is no doubt about it. And I am sure that like many of you, I hate the old "hey, at least we made it this far" attitude. Forget that, I want the team to go out there and beat the doors off BG. But...regardless of what happens lets enjoy this one. What KSU did yesterday speaks volumes about the players, coaches and staff.

burden, I'm staying away from the point spread and taking the under! DEE - FENSE!! DEE - FENSE!!

GO FLASHES!
