Kelloggs' CEO "Let them eat corn flakes for dinner"
On tonight's episode of how detached corporations are from the normal American..

Quote:“Let them eat Corn Flakes” appears to be Kellogg’s CEO Gary Pilnick’s advice to cash-strapped shoppers who are spending the highest portion of their income on food than at any point in the last 30 years.

In an interview with CNBC last week, WK Kellogg CEO Pilnick said the company was advertising cereal for dinner to consumers looking for more affordable options. “Give chicken the night off,” the ad’s cheery tagline reads. WK Kellogg owns cereals such as Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Corn Flakes, Raisin Bran and others.

“The cereal category has always been quite affordable, and it tends to be a great destination when consumers are under pressure,” Pilnick said. “If you think about the cost of cereal for a family versus what they might otherwise do, that’s going to be much more affordable.”

His advice hasn’t landed well with people frustrated by spending 26% more on groceries since 2020; on social media the campaign is being seen as insensitive.

Despite the CEO’s assurances, Kellogg’s advertisement and Pilnick’s comments have led to a backlash on social media.

Some consumers have called the comments tone deaf from an executive who made more than $4 million last year. They note that boxes of popular cereals now cost more than $7 and cereal is not an adequate substitution for a full dinner.

There are ways to make dinner affordable if you are willing to cook. But, a CEO making $4,000,000 a year telling people to eat corn flakes for dinner...

Somebody in the marketing department should have told him it's best you sit this one out boss

Hence the breakaway from self checkout. Companies are figuring out it is cheaper to pay someone to check people out than dealing with "shrinkage"

Nah stink, they whip out their EBT card.

It's the local crack heads selling their EBT benefits for drug money that are robbing places when they realize they have to provide food to keep their dependants

I've seen the TN Ag department's proposals to all but eliminate HDCs and that pisses me off pretty strongly.

Shrinkage is one of those PC words that keeps the reality at bay. You get shrinkage in cold water, you get theft and thieves with shoplifting and only guys who live their shrinkage call theft shrinkage. Call them thieves and maybe somebody gets around to preventing or stopping it. Call it shrinkage and nobody cares.

RE: Kelloggs' CEO "Let them eat corn flakes for dinner"
I think the cost of cereal greatly outpaced inflation when you take into account price increases and reduced package sizes. I haven't researched this in great detail, but from what I've seen with grocery pricing the biggest price hikes have occurred with the cheapest convenience foods. Frozen pizzas, chicken/turkey pot pie and other frozen convenience foods plus cereals have jumped in pricing.

Food prices are ultimately going to force people to turn back the clock. People are going to have to learn how to cook and to not waste their food. Meals will become much more complementary and eventually the concepts of foods tied to specific meals will go away. There's zero reason why people can't eat soup made from leftovers for breakfast.

7 bucks for a box that you might get 3-4 full bowls of cereal from. When I was a kid a box of cheerios lasted 4 boys about a week

y'all ain' seen shite, yet!

I do a bit of driving around town during the course of a normal day, and everywhere, from downtown Memphis to the cushy bedroom communities that surround it, I see more and more homeless encampments. These people literally build these encampments from garbage—actual, literal garbage. They start with someone erecting a tent, and the next thing you know, there are 20 more of them surrounded by shopping carts full of all kinds of refuse. It's nuts.

But that's not the worst or most concerning thing I see these days. What bothers me more is seeing some dude who looks absolutely lost standing on the side of a road, not near a bus stop or anything like that, just standing on the side of the road. Just pick a random roadside, and you'll see some strange sights—obvious foreigners with nothing except a small backpack and a lost look.

Then there are the crazies walking around screaming at the sky or any passersby who catch their eye. Women walking around in bare feet in 40-degree weather with maybe a sweatshirt on and howling at the moon. And then there are those men with that insane look in their eyes who, if you happen to make eye contact with them, will take it as a challenge. These are common sights now.

These people used to get locked away in mental institutions for their own safety and that of the public. Nowadays, they are foot soldiers for the left.

however, what's become 'amusing' is shopping at the grocery store is as expensive as eating out was pre-Covidian...

why is that ... I'm pretty fk'n certain 15 million crossing the border in three years will have some form of negative consumer impact ... specifically, to those that ARE NOT SUBSIDIZED

Dude's the head of a cereal company, what did people expect his to say to eat? Steak? Anyway, as with most things, one has to be smart with shopping these days. I purchased a two bag box of cereal from BJs this past weekend for like $8. Lots cheaper than buying in a regular grocery store. Spices are another item we buy a lot. That $5 McCormick spice at a regular grocery store can be had for a $1 at an Aldi (not same brand obviously, but same spice). Shop smart and save money.
