BASKETBALL Coaches Hot Seat Rumors, etc. (MT, FIU, UTEP?)
MT Rumor.

Twtter X account @RumorsCoach saying Kermit Davis back to MT.

Of course--this is only ONE report from an X account.

(If you wish... put posts of any other CUSA BB coaching rumors, news in this thread)

UTEP fans-- Is Golding safe or in big trouble?

Golding is safe for another year. We're only half way through conference play. They packed the Don last night and handed the Aggies their ass. Also, the team is packed with promising freshmen.
If things don't work out this season, he'll be in danger next season.

David Terrell, Trey Horton, and Elijah Jones all look to be three very good freshmen to build around. Frankly, I don't see Golding getting fired, everyone can see UTEP's talent level is improving each year.

Not sure that's the path I would go down if I were making the call. Took Kermit ages to have postseason success in the first stint. Bombed at Ole Miss. How many more years would he even want to coach?

Yes indeed. Kermit still seems young for his age and not ready to hang 'em up. College hoops seems to have older coaches than foosball.

Instant excitement combined with upcoming upgrades to Murphy Center.

Great with the media and big money -- NIL & Portal can be a boost for us (under CKD) and not a detriment, like it is currently.

Kermit (a Boots Donnelly original hire) won't kow-tow to President 7-Wood McSleeze, board chair Steve Smith, or AD Chris Massaro, so I don't think it'll happen. Worried current coach, who is a nice guy, will get a secret raise and extension under current "leadership" (due to his niceness and clean image).

Team has gone from best to worst in a short time period.

BBK -- Bring Back Kermit

It's likely that if we don't hire Kermit that whoever we do hire would have a resume very similar to McDevitt.

Great point. Do we trust the folks doing the hiring? They have a piss-poor track record. And, be assured, it will be McPhee (who knows not a damn thing about hoops) making the hire.

At least we know what we are getting with Kermit.

It may take him a bit to get us corrected offensively, but his team's defense will be top-notch.

We seemed to go the opposite methodology with the last-hiring. I despise the supposed NBA-style. What we had worked (I wanted assistant Win Case for the job).

I too favored Case.

It's entirely possible that the next McDevitt type guy would be the right hire, but most likely good scenario in that case is that guy gets things really going and jumps to a power conference job in 3 or 4 years. Which of course would be a good thing and better than replacing another wrong hire, but with Kermit we might actually have some success AND hang onto the guy for more than just a few years.

Another good point I had not considered.

Maybe move into an AD role eventually ? Or have the days of an old coach as AD passed us by ?

MT should take Kermit Davis back in a heartbeat. Of course (at this stage) I'd also take an untested High School Coach over McDevitt. He has been a disaster!

Keep in mind the right hire, the guy we almost had, and the o r it should have been was Ryan Odom. If the president wouldn’t have gotten in the way that’s who it would have been.

While he wouldn’t have been here long term he would have kept things going in the right direction.

Not a hot seat rumor but just heard a RUMOR that WKU's Lutz is on the short list for An Ohio State HC job. 03-banghead

I really like Lutz and think he can be a very good coach. Ohio State hiring him now would be a bit premature. If Dusty May isn't their first call then I would be surprised.

Nothing I've read has him on the short list or any list. There are way bigger names available. Sean Miller, UCLA coach, SC coach, FAU coach, etc.

I think golding is kept another season, although I'd prefer the opposite. He just ain't the guy to turn utep around.

Outside of possibly Jeremy Ballard at FIU, I doubt we will see much coaching turnover in CUSA this off-season. I think UTEP's Joe Golding and Middle Tennessee's Nick McDevitt are probably safe for one more season. Just my opinion.
