RE: 2023 football attendance by school and by conference
I hate it when teams inflate numbers because it makes it so hard to compare, especially at the G5 level where most numbers are inflated to some degree. I remember when we played FIU earlier in the year and there was maybe 5 or 6k in the stands but they reported over 15k. Meanwhile Liberty had a couple games announced as sell outs last year then reported numbers that were less than sellouts. It leads me to believe we report butts in seats but I'm not sure why we would do that when everyone else is reporting tickets sold.

The schools in the G5 that are winning do get those large numbers. Even when Boise State is on tv against major teams that are winning? They still gain the fans support especially when they had an off year last year. That is why they want to expand to like 52,000 because they don't have a pro team in the state. Their's and Fresno State's future stadium would be at the same level as the Big 12s.
Yes but when you watch MAC weekday games in late November in the cold rain and snow and there is no way there is more than 1,000 people in attendance. I know when UMass beat UConn in 2018 ESPN had 24,150 attendance and there wasn't more than 1,000 there in reality.

Or watching a Miami Florida game playing Florida A&M, and they never got half the stadium filled, and they went by tickets sold. I do think a lot of the P5 were actually inflated tickets sold instead of counting how many people who did showed up. Colorado is one that went by tickets sold and not who did attend the game.

Wow!!! Troy had better attendance than Northwestern, Vandy, SMU, and Duke, not to mention several AAC programs!!
This is an interesting article about actual scanned tickets at Wisconsin (Camp Randall).

https://madison.com/sports/college/footb...0cee2.html

More humans showed up to watch Buffalo and Georgia Southern than Northwestern and Nebraska

It would be interesting to have that kind of data for all schools, but many don't actually scan tickets, and some who do probably wouldn't want to make the actual numbers public. But it would be nice to compare the data for schools who do scan and are willing to share their data.
In the case of Wisconsin the newspaper did a public records request. At least some schools don't get a choice. Schools that have gone to electronic tickets have scanned them. If they use paper tickets they have stubs.

JSU has to be using sold tickets, rarely are we near the number reported. We have good attendance for our type school but the numbers are not correct. I do believe they are more correct than some others. Attended games as some of the others and the numbers we a long ways off.

Is there something I missed recently? Fresno State at 57 is not a G school anymore? Also VCS do sellout a lot. Were just waiting for a bond issue on this upcoming ballot to get a small stipend to renovate our stadium. Hmm.

Lol

What do you have against Navy at #70? That your cutoff is 69? Still ahead of the same four autonomy schools. You didn't use a round number like "over 30 000" which would have pulled in both Navy and Wake.

Then I look again and you missed Fresno, too

Also forgot Fresno State at #57….top G5 and ahead of all 3 ACC newbies and the Pac2!

And as a side note: if I were Fresno St AD, I’d be doing home and homes with East Carolina. We are so similar, it’s pathetic it hasn’t happened yet, imo.

For USF and East Carolina, the lack of football success has impacted their attendance. -And possibly for this time forward.

Both schools are capable of 45,000 fans or more. -Maybe 50,000.

We will see how the NIL moves forward.

***Are the COVID years excluded from the 5 year numbers?

Concerning Wisconsin- I suspect Wisconsin's challenges are a trend of the silent generation and baby boomers aging and not attending games.

Even Nick Saban complained about Alabama's attendance and threatened to convert student seating if the students did not show up for games.

Gen Z doesn't care about sports. That's part of a bigger problem.
As Gen Z spends an increasing amount of time tuned into our digital lives, many of us lose sight of the traditional forms of community that previous generations relied on.

According to a 2021 study, only 23% of Generation Z describe themselves as passionate sports fans, as opposed to 42% of millennials, 33% of Generation X and 31% of baby boomers.

Further, a sizable 27% of Gen Z describe themselves as “anti-sports,” compared with single-digit percentages from other generations saying the same.

Fun fact Montana would be #79 on this list beating out a good number of other G5 programs and a few P5 ones. MSU is further down but still #90 overall on this list, both would do well at least in this regards in FBS.
