Yes this is true. And for hoops as well. Not sure if that coach is still there but they had a guy that was running the Paul Westhead/ LMU “system” a few years back

this is true.

I do think, based on reactions from kids on the various teams, that bowl games are important to them.

I hate that college sports is being decimated by a few greedy narcissists.

I don't know who could step in and put a stop to it. Or who would step in.

I think it's too far gone at this point. If Charlie Baker's new proposal to allow for schools to directly pay players, it will create such a divide between the haves and the have-nots that only 20 to 30 athletic programs will be able to survive. I read that, under his proposal, it would cost a university between $6 and $7 million annually to pay athletes. With the exception of the upper echelon schools in the Power 6, most athletic programs don't make a profit. So where will that money come from? Non-revenue sports will be the first to be impacted, but eventually universities will have to make difficult decisions regarding whether or not they can continue to fund the so-called "revenue sports" and take huge losses annually.

It won't surprise me if within the next decade there are only 60 universities in the country competing in major college football.

Mostly Men's non revenue sports. Women's non revenue is protected by Title lX.

One of the single biggest rewards of going to a bowl is to have 15 additional practice days teams receive. These are used primarily for backups. HUGE for coaches.

College Bowl games are far more than what most think.

We've been hearing that coach-speak about the practice for years. How exactly has it helped us? Especially in this era of transfer portal when backups are frequently BOH.

And lol - that last sentence. You just can't help yourself.

Since we started going to bowl games, and getting those extra practices, we have gone from 0 bowl games to expecting one every year.

Maybe it is a coincidence?

Maybe not looking at the decades without those practices and the state of the program during those years.

As far as the new portal era is concerned, all the men in these extra practices are not in the portal to leave. The vast majority of them will be back in the spring, and the few that aren't are a good practice squad for the rest.

Zo Goodson is the coach. Was on Tubby's staff. Also, Rhodes had the first or one of the first NIL packages for D3 players, so.......

Maybe 15 practices in December really sets you up to win big the next September. I'm skeptical and think it's just coach-speak to keep the guys engaged. And what coach doesn't like more practice?

Or maybe it's the fact that the number of bowl games has gone from 28 when we went to that New Orleans Bowl, to 43 now.

And maybe still, it's that we decided to invest in the program over the last 15 or so years like never before.

But I suppose it's possibly the extra practices in December of the year before.
