UC receives $56 million gift
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A large endowment will go toward supporting student athletes at three University of Cincinnati's colleges.

A $56 million gift from the Hugh Hoffman estate will create the Hoffman Honors Scholars Program. It is the largest donation to scholarships in UC’s history.

Hoffman Honors Scholars will consist of undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences, the College-Conservatory of Music and the Carl H. Lindner College of Business.

In addition to the Hoffman Honors Scholars, the Hugh H. Hoffman Scholarship Fund will support UC student-athletes with a $14 million investment. Hoffman intended to support student-athletes in a variety of sports, in particular, female student-athletes.

This is outstanding! The story broke weeks ago that his estate would be making large gifts to several institutions in Cincinnati so this is an update of specifically how the gift will be used by UC.

There's a reason gifts of this size are called "transformational". Great public universities such as UC become even greater through such generosity.

I don't think this puts UC across the line. 56M will disburse about 2.5M/year, and the benefactor wants it spread across the entire athletic department with an emphasis on female athletes. It's set up to be the exact opposite of a slush fund to buy football players. And, we still have the smallest budget in the B12. Like I said in an earlier thread, it ain't gonna be 70 schools. It will be 48. It will be the existing B1G and SEC combined with those that have the AD finances (not subsidies or student fees) to compensate players directly.

Off the top of my head: Notre Dame, FSU, Clemson, UNC, UVA, Stanford and Miami are probably locks. That leaves a nice musical chairs game of about 30 schools trying for the last 7 seats at the table.

He's trying to stop the P5 football breakaway, though I don't know how presidents and athletic directors feel about that, broadly speaking. P5 (or now 4) self-governance may happen at some point with the NCAA picking up the remaining sports.
