If your idol hadn't bailed after only four years to take an at best mid-P5 job and try to take some of our players (Spillane) and recruits (Morgan) with him,

people might feel different.

Sure...that's what it is. Nothing personal at all. He showed what the program could be, which was better than anything before or since. Rooting for him to fail at Minnesota is extremely petty, if not pathetic.

I want him to fail, after leaving the way he did. Hell, half this forum roots against our own team/coaches/players, so I don't see the problem with rooting against a guy who did us dirty.

I have posted this before but my parents (and thus all my relatives) were from Minnesota.

So I have always rooted for the Golden Gophers.

And I also hope that former WMU coaches do well when they move up.

Has nothing to do with Fleck personally.

PJ is not the enemy folks. If anything he put WMU in front of the country. He was a salesman. He made WMU a brand while he was here. He got himself on all sorts of networks promoting WMU. We can't take that away from what he brought us...

He left. Not a surprise. Kathy did us NO favors there... I think if we had a more savvy AD at that time... not one with one foot out the door its very possible we maybe hold on to PJ.

PJ saw that it was gonna be bleak for a few years after 2016. He threw it all against the wall that season. Trying to poach some of his players HE brought to WMU doesn't strike me as bad as some on this board. He had relationships with these players when they decided to go to WMU... for PJ.

I root for him. He is likely going to be a middling Minnesota team as always... not a knock on PJ... jsut the way it seems to go for some reason at Minny.

Funny how much changes in 6 years.

In 2017, what Fleck did was pretty scandalous and got caught. Though I imagine even then, this shadowy stuff happened with some regularity across the landscape. I mean, I'd bet money MSU was back-channeling with Reed to come play with his buddy Thorne well before he announced his departure.

Today? With NIL and the portal, I'm sure it's just anarchy. Players getting contacted via social media on the regular. Spillane would've been gone to MN without anyone batting an eyelash and KB would've been laughed at if she called it out.

Oregon State's HC gets hired by MSU. Oregon State's QB enters the portal and - what a coincidence - winds up at MSU. Of course Smith was giving Chiles prior assurances that he could flip over to MSU.

What Fleck did WAS AGAINST THE RULES THEN. He got caught. If Lester did it this the board would go nuts. Hilarious the double standard here.

I didn't say otherwise.

But isn't it still against the rules now? It's an honest question - things are changing so fast that even a moderate college football fan like myself can't keep up with it all.

Your memory is also fuzzy, there were some long threads about the Spillane situation (and other players) back then, and has at least partially soured a lot opinions about him on this board. Do you see people cheering and fist-pumping when Fleck wins games in Minnie?

Not that much since 2019, he doesn't win that often.
