This explains alot.

It seems like Williams, his legal team and the Tiger athletic department have been communicating regularly throughout this ordeal.

Based on the tweet I'm impressed with how the university has handled this.

For those quick to judge, Penny didn't come from the best background. He came from the rough streets of Binghamton infested with gangs. He said in an interview that getting shot forced him to get his life on the right path.

Wikipedia...

Quote:High school career
Hardaway grew up playing basketball in Memphis for Treadwell High School where he averaged 36.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 3.9 steals, and 2.8 blocks as a senior and was named Parade Magazine National High School player of the year. He finished his high school career with 3,039 points.

College career
At Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis), Hardaway had to sit out the 1990–91 season with the Memphis State Tigers due to being academically ineligible according to the Proposition 48 regulation. His grades were so low that he was admitted to the University on a special exemption from University President Thomas G. Carpenter. He took the ACT five times with a maximum score of 17.2, with 17.5 being required to be eligible to play in college.

While he was sitting out, Hardaway was robbed at gunpoint outside his cousin LaMarcus Golden's house and was shot in his foot by a stray bullet, putting his career in jeopardy. He returned to school while rehabbing his foot when the bullet was removed; that year, he made the Dean's List.

Since leaving the NBA he's been focused on helping young people keep their lives on the right track.

We need more Pennys.

Ah, that's the solution, put them on ignore instead of expecting them to behave in a reasonable manner. That's textbook enabling.

Uh, you are not in charge of everybody else's behavior online. Poke a bear, and sometimes they will eat you. Or you can ignore them.

And there you go making a derogatory comment to me again. Good grief. Seek counseling. Bye twice.

You think that paper tiger is a bear? Pointing out your enabling is being derogatory? Self-awareness would benefit the both you.

**** off.

Crazies indeed.

I don't think there is any way, come hell or high water, that he plays this year. Probably next fall.

He should be treated like any other student on scholarship under similar circumstances. My guess is felons are not allowed to retain their scholarship.

He has been charged but not convicted.

Not true. When you plead guilty to a felony charge, you are immediately considered a convicted felon. Same as if a jury found you guilty.

I looked it up, and posted the link somewhere above.

Criminal threat in CA can be a misdemeanor or a felony. Where does it say it was treated as a felony?

They said the charge he pled guilty to would be reduced to a misdemeanor if he completed the conditions set forth...

1. Gun Safety Course
2. Anger Management Course
3. 80 hours of Community Service

I guess that implies pleading to a felony charge, but I don't know the law.

RE: Mikey Williams pleads guilty to lesser charge in court
This tweet is exactly 3 posts above mine. It clearly states that the felony can be reduced to a misdemeanor next August at the sentencing hearing IF
he does what the court ordered.

Then the text link I added (also somewhere above) says that when you enter a guilty plea to a felony charge, it is the same as being convicted by a jury, so from that moment you are a convicted felon. BUT, it will be struck from his record if he does what he was ordered to do, and then classified as a misdemeanor.

Here it is again.

https://www.quora.com/Why-am-I-considere...convicted.

NOTE: Details of plea deals obviously vary from case to case, determined in negotiations between the prosecution and the defense, then approved by the presiding judge. However, as the Q&A states, once you enter a guilty plea to a charge, it's the same as a jury verdict. As a matter of common knowledge, different states don't treat jury verdicts differently. You're either guilty, or not. So that also applies to guilty pleas.

Mikey Williams pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of making criminal threats and had his other eight felony charges dismissed.

The lone felony charge can be reduced to a misdemeanor during an Aug. 12 sentencing if certain requirements are met

I’d guess he’s probably considered convicted once he’s convicted

No guessing necessary. It's all spelled out in articles in the Memphis media now.

He is convicted as of yesterday. To one count of making terroristic threats, a felony.

He pled guilty to that charge. HOWEVER, the plea deal negotiated by the prosecution and the defense was:

1. The other 8 felony charges were dropped.

2. The one felony count will be reduced to a misdemeanor next August 12 at the formal sentencing hearing, IF Mikey completes the following:

a. A gun safety training class
b. An anger management class
c. 80 hours of community service

And of course, Mikey has to keep his nose clean between now and then.

Assuming he does all that, the felony conviction disappears on August 12, 2024, and simply becomes a misdemeanor, like a traffic ticket.

RE: Mikey Williams pleads guilty to lesser charge in court
As for if Mikey ever plays for Memphis, I think he does. But not until the 2024-25 season.

He can't go to the draft next April b/c he won't be drafted without first showing his skill level against real competition. Especially after all this legal mess.

And Penny stuck by him, and Mikey's BFF JJ Taylor is playing for Memphis, so Mikey is coming, IMO.

He's not going overseas. He doesn't need the money. Is anybody here aware that Mikey's net worth is about $7M?

His goal is to get to the NBA. IMO, his easiest path is to go to college until he proves his worth to the NBA, similar to what Emoni Bates did. Emoni also had a misdemeanor gun charge just before he played in the 2022-23 season.

Depending on his spending habits and extant obligations, $7M may or may not go very far, especially after Puma dropped him.

Which also is more evidence that he does need guidance in his life. Penny has worked with youth for years to help them get/keep their lives on the right track.

Everyone can laugh about it, and understandably so, but when it gets down to reality here's kid that really does need to make sure he lives right and gains the maturity to understand actions have consequences. Bad actions have very bad consequences while good actions will keep you out of trouble and help you reach your goals.

And I know all of us would much rather see our youth behave properly regardless of how they got there.

Completely agree and with his background and wealth, he is exactly the kind of person who can reach out to and positively influence many of these young men.

He still earns money from social media, as well. Hell, he likely gained followers from the recent notoriety, sad to say. Kid has been earning millions for years. His sponsors cut him off, but not his social media accounts.

Unless he somehow pisses it all away between now and whenever, he'll be fine.

P.S. "Extant obligations" are considered in calculating net worth.

Do you have any data reflecting the income generated by social media? It also doesn't reflect his financial solvency. To cite one example, MC Hammer generated $30M in revenue one year and literally declared bankruptcy the next. It doesn't matter how much you make if it's exceeded by how much you spend.
