Intriguing.

But somebody still has to go to Hawaii. Almost nobody really wants to.

Back in 2007, Boise State played a regular-season game at Hawaii on November 23, and then had to go back and play in the Hawaii Bowl against ECU on December 23. For Boise, the choice of bowls came down to either Hawaii or staying at home for the Potato Bowl. Normally, Hawaii would’ve played in that bowl game but they were undefeated and got the Sugar Bowl against Georgia. The Broncos (10-2) were heavily favored (-10.5) against ECU (7-5), but the Pirates won and I have always believed the travel-issue cut against Boise in that game. I know many Bronco fans felt the same way.

It’s probably not a huge deal in the decision process but Rice has like 4 players from Hawaii, believe it or not, including our number one RB. Also the starting kicker and punter, and a transfer WR from UCLA who never plays. I think we’d be okay with the Hawaii Bowl, especially because it gives us another week to get JT Daniels to pass concussion protocol and practicing with the team.

Jerry Palm thinks the AAC may have to give up its Hawaii Bowl spot.

The race to 82 bowl-eligible teams came to a reasonably satisfying end Saturday. We only ended up with 79 teams at 6-6 or better, but that left room for James Madison and Jacksonville State to get to the postseason when they would not have otherwise been eligible while making the FBS transition.

With JMU added as a fill-in, the Sun Belt will have 12 of its 14 teams in bowl games this season, half of those with 6-6 records. There are 12 bowls where a Sun Belt team could play, so that doesn't sound like a problem, except that the New Mexico Bowl usually gets a Conference USA team for its spot opposite the Mountain West and New Mexico State is eligible for the second straight season. Last year, the Aggies wound up in the Quick Lane Bowl filling in for the Big Ten, but ESPN gave the New Mexico Bowl a pretty good non-standard matchup instead. It would be a tough call to move New Mexico State out again this season.

Instead, I'm guessing that ESPN will ask the AAC to give up its spot in the Hawaii Bowl for the 12th Sun Belt team. With the SEC short a couple of eligible teams this season for its games, SMU is projected to fill in at the Liberty Bowl
.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...ids-upset/

That said, both ESPN pickers and the 24/7 projections have Rice in the Hawaii Bowl, which is to be expected because we won't bring a lot of fans anyways.

I for one do not blame you for not wanting to go to Frisco..

And I think a conversation needs to be had about the number of bowls in the DFW area. If these postseason games are truly for the players. Why are sending these kids to play in the parking lots of Dallas suburbs?

Then Hero Sports has MEMPHIS playing Arkansas State for the 2nd time this season in the Frisco Bowl on 12/19. That is BS; no way that game happens.

I agree. No way would they have us playing Ark State again. That would be horrible. Especially since we beat the crap out of them at their place the second game of the season.

I’m going to say the league would match its higher teams with P5 matchups. The key is Tulane or SMU claiming that NY6 spot then
Loser of Championship Tulane or SMU
UTSA
Memphis
USF
Would be the pecking order to play in a bowl game vs P5

Why would you have UTSA above Memphis? Our overall record is better.

Assuming SMU gets ranked, we'll have played 3 top 25 teams teams losing by 7 to #9, by 10 to #18, by 4 to #?.

UTSA played 2 top 25 teams losing by 31 to #25, and losing by 13 to #18.

UTSA is 7-1 we're 6-2

if the SEC can't fill the Liberty Bowl don't we get it?

Tulane - Access Bowl
SMU - Fenway
UTSA - Military
Memphis - Liberty
USF - Cure Bowl
Rice - Frisco

that would be perfect IMHO.

I'm good with anything but the Gasparilla (or Hawaii). Was hoping for Myrtle Beach... or Boca.

According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, it is possible Memphis could receive an invite from the Liberty Bowl. I would enjoy watching the Tigers play in Memphis, but I hope the player have an opportunity to go someplace warm and fun. They earned it.

I think for most fans and players, going away is a bigger reward than staying home and playing a bowl in your hometown. It’s just a different, more fun atmosphere.

With that said I can understand bowl games wanting a hometown team for attendance

My impression is the majority of Memphis fans would prefer the LB b/c more can attend. Not sure how the players feel.

When have high-level college athletes not been paid mercenaries? Let's pretend that prior to NIL that top players weren't already getting paid under the table or that "student athletes" at competitive programs weren't receiving scholarships, stipends, and preferential treatment. To pretend otherwise is delusion of the highest order. The only difference is that now it's aboveboard and players have a right to profit off of their name, image, and likeness. What a novel concept.

That was my one very small hope of a bowl that might wait for Navy to pick up win #6 six days after bowl bids.

Military bowl can take winner of Army - Navy
5-6 is better than 5-7, and i didn't go to college

so Big-10 is gonna give us 5-7 Minn with no QB, can't wait.
which comes out to 100,000 per school and tell the academies
go get ready for Middle East
