James Madison Football: Commentary
METTLEN: JMU's President Has A Lot Of Explaining To Do
Nov 22, 2023

Quote:If there’s a good explanation, it sure would be nice if Jonathan Alger would come out and explain.

Because without one, the president of James Madison University is in danger of losing the support of fans, alumni and key donors — if he hasn’t already. In the midst of the most insanely successful fall semester JMU sports has ever enjoyed, the future of the entire athletic department is in peril because of one decision.

If suing the NCAA was the right move on Friday — or the Friday before that, or the Friday before that — then it was the right move on Monday. If it wasn’t, then it should have never gotten to the point it did.

Last week, JMU had an opportunity to win the Sun Belt Conference and potentially play in a New Year’s Six bowl game if it was granted postseason eligibility.

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares said Saturday he was ready to sue the NCAA on Monday.

As of today, JMU has an opportunity to win the Sun Belt Conference and potentially play in a New Year’s Six bowl game if granted postseason eligibility.

Monday came and went. Nobody sued.

Statements released by the university — Alger rarely does interviews and denied requests from the Daily News-Record on Tuesday — attempted to make it seem like the decision was a consensus.

Did Miyares — or James Madison athletic director Jeff Bourne, for that matter — lose their appetite to fight over the weekend? Seems unlikely. It’s interesting that previous statements released by the school on such manners were co-signed by Alger and Bourne. Bourne’s name was nowhere to be found on any official communication out of JMU Tuesday.

Ultimately, it was the call of the university president and the Board of Visitors.

Again, if there’s a reason why that decision makes sense, it would be great if Alger would explain, because those of us outside the Alumnae Hall ivory tower can’t figure it out.

Better to sit on the safe side. I know it stinks.

I doubt he cares, just a flood of emails some poor assistant has to throw into the spam folder and/or respond with a thank you for your inquiry we’ll look into it and provide a response if necessary.

Yeah, I'm not interested in raising hell with Alger over this. Most of us frankly don't know whether the lawsuit would have been meritorious, and it's his call to look out for the broader interests of the university.

Hopefully we'll get into some sort of bowl. If we don't we still had one hell of a season and a lot of fun, and will kick more tail in the years to come.

It's not "raising hell" to simply do as the point of Mettlen's article states: "If there’s a good explanation, it sure would be nice if Jonathan Alger would come out and explain."

That’s the whole point of the article, he’s never going to come out and explain, at least right now as we all want his explanation. Mettlen gave him every chance to give his side and his articles would reach the masses. If he didn’t want to provide him a thoughtful response and knew he’d get flamed without one, there is no way an email writing crusade will get any substantive responses either.

Perhaps, but that logic sounds similar to the logic of not pursuing the lawsuit. Why not go forward with it?

What harm would come of it to voice opinions in whatever manner you wish? Email, write letters, call his admin assistant, do whatever you wish or nothing at all. Freedom is a wonderful thing.

A lawsuit that requires the courts to decide on and force the NCAA to take action certainly doesn’t equate to an anonymous email spamming of the president that won’t even read or respond to anyway, but please have at it, email away.

Depending upon the outcome of Saturday's game, will depend if I send an email or not.

I'm not happy with the Adminisration specifically Jon Boy.......

Yes, vividly. When I called Alger out on his subterfuge, he stopped responding to me. I got a canned response from his secretary as he curled into the fetal position.

He gave me excellent detailed information to recruit the business college in the years before that. After that, he would not respond to me for business or for athletics. He has the BOV in the palm of his hand through lots of illegal tactics in the past.
