Rice 13, Charlotte 0, halftime

Late missed FG for Charlotte keeps the shutout intact

Points delta of 13 matches the delta between two teams margin against first place SMU (-5 vs -18), fun fact

Touchdown, plus two.

The Rice Owls are not yet bowl eligible, but we can smell it from here

21-0 early 3Q

Charlotte is awful. None of them showed up to play. I'd be very worried if I were a 49er fan. I thought you guys brought in boatloads of talent in the off season. What's going on?

Sorry, clt. The reality seems to be that we'll win this and perhaps next week and go to a low-tier bowl. Amazing how the football fortunes appear to conspire to screw us over in the long term by occasional short term "success" such as this year. Rooting for the program's success is seemingly too often pitted against rooting for success on the field week to week. It would be refreshing to find both of those more clearly aligned. Clear direction seems to be a decades-long missing ingredient on S. Main. The ambiguously happy accident of a season like this can lead to more of the same frustration. The pent up desire for real breakthrough success shares a duality with the wistful realization that the admin and athletic dept just doesn't understand or really care all that much. Congrats to the players for the win. They, too apparently will be absorbed into the Borg of Rice drifting listlessly down the middle of lower-tier-mediocrity to just-above-bottoming that appears the hallmark of the program. They will more than likely cheer for more of the same, since that is what they know, led by this latest pied piper. And here we are. And it's a beautiful day.

And now for point counterpoint.

If we continue improving by an average of one win per season then by 2029 we are in the CFP and by 2032 we are natty champs.

Counterpoint that, goodowl, you ignorant tulS-a!

Band-aid needs to be ripped off, instead looks likely they color in another smiley-face on football program with marker and call it a day for another year (or three to five, depending on the extension length.) Magic 8-ball says outlook hazy at best with that scenario. More of the same on South Main. NMSU beat a non-top-25-but-still-Auburn today. And they dominated them in most every aspect with a solid gameplan and execution. A Signature Win for their program to build on, perhaps. I don't dislike Charlotte, but they're no Auburn-in-a-(for them)-down-year right now. I root for our Program to improve, whatever that takes. This doesn't seem like it, but who knows? Let the players celebrate. We'll find out in a while what it really means. Peace.

The last three times we won three+ games in conference… the combined total winning margin was 15, 12, and 23 points for those three wins. This year we’ve won two in conference by 3+ TD.

This team is a step forward to the eye test and by metrics from previous editions of the Bloomgren era, all while competing in a TOP 3 G conference.

It’s measurable progress on both offense and defense and I think we’ve earned the respect of a lot of our “new” conference mates along the way this year as a team to be reckoned with.

That’s how I see it. Rice Football has been fun to watch this year and I hope we just keep on trending up.

But don’t take my word for it, ask our three common opponents from last year to this year.
Houston 7 pt loss => 2 pt win
Charlotte 33 pt loss => 21 pt win
UTSA 34 pt loss => 20 pt loss

Or FAU 3 pt loss => TBD

Last year FAU beat us and we both ended up 5-7. If the beat us again this year then that’s only 3 out of 4 opponents that we improved against.
If we beat them then it’s 4 out of 4.

I hope we keep trending up too, but it's hard to see it after this season and the previous ones under this regime. Remember when previous couch Bailiff won out to end the season and got that contract extension? How'd that one work out? History has a way of repeating for those who don't learn from it. I'd like to think this was a significant turn. Maybe--for NMSU, who beat Auburn in Auburn, AL. Beating Charlotte in Charlotte just doesn't seem to be comparable. But I could be wrong. This might be the game that starts the undefeated juggernaut of Rice football under Bloom. Either that, or we're just 'Bloomin' it' again (not my phrase, but not trademarked, AFAIK.)

Hopefully the AD does the right thing and pulls the plug on the Bloomgren era after the FAU game. Going to a bowl game at 6-6 isn't anything special these days.

Our radio guy was very impressed and sounded like he was reading from the ghostofclt press release on the stadium and campus.

If he mentioned the skyline though I missed it
