A G5-only playoff?
Group of 5 conference leaders are discussing a potential G5-only college football playoff, The Athletic’s Chris Vannini reports, a concept that frankly makes a little too much sense. As college football’s elite coalesces power at the top, FBS’ dozens of other schools represent a talented middle class being more and more left out with every new conference realignment update. I am for the G5 playoff.
Pretty soon the G5 will be Div 2.0?

And Rice may be the only former D-1 school in D-2.0.

Can Rice buy into the new NIL league?
I wanted to ask "Will Rice ~" but decided against it.

I don't think the consolidation is done. The BIG10, SEC, and BIG12 likely expand by two each in the future. Then there will be a P3 and a G7. At that point, I think the two entities split, at least in football. They'll have their own championship, and we'll have ours.

I just don;t get the big 12 surviving. What is their draw? Iowa St, WVU, UH?

They beefed up on the top of the AAC to survive, then helped kill the PAC. Great move by them. Yormack reworked his TV deal early. The Big12 has a lot of big state schools.

That and there is actual fan interest in the Big 12's (core) geography, which was the Great Plains/Southwest. The Pac 10 was largely in major urban areas (aside from Wazzu, the Oregon schools and maybe UArizona, depending on how much one considers Tucson a major urban area) and so they had a lot more fair-weather fans that could find other things to do in LA, Bay Area, Phoenix and Seattle.
Aside from UH, TCU, UCF and Cincinnati (three of which are very recent additions and one of which was added in the last decade), the Big 12 schools are in college towns and have more fan engagement, both at the student and alumni level.
