Its early. This team has some damn fire power. And YOUNG fire power.

I was at the game. WMU dominated 95% of the time. Completely dominated.

BUT, there were a few defensive lapses and Rowe looked rusty. The first 2 Ferris goals were odd-man rushes off turnovers, and while I would've liked to see Rowe stop at least one of them they're so unpredictable and he did stop a couple later in the game. The last 2 Ferris goals were soft.

A lot of new players look really good, both transfers and freshmen. Philips ended up with a hat trick (goals by Somoza and Hilsendager were changed to Philips after video reviews). Bump is a stud who played in all situations and looked great all game long. Somoza looked really good too, VERY high skill level.

Ferschy was able to pretty much roll 4 lines and 3 defensive pairs all game long and the drop off in play was insignificant. A few "kid moments" as Ferch put it in the postgame presser, but really a solid game overall.

And the Lunatics were f***ing amazing. It was so damn loud in Lawson last night, like my ears hurt loud. EPIC job students. And record student attendance too just over 2,000 (used to be a hard cap on students at 1,800).

It's awesome that we set a Lunatic record in the 1st game on a Thursday night vs Ferris. That tells me we don't need to sell the program to our students anymore. They just know we're an elite college hockey program.

There will be better turnouts for the rest of the seats during weekend games. You'll get more local fans & alumni able to make the trip for those games. But, having our students this engaged already is awesome.

Congrats to Fersch & Andy Murray. You've built an elite college hockey program that just reloads & the fanbase recognizes it.

But still no HD. Frown
How many streaming games on NCHC.tv, B1G+, & Flo Sports are actually in HD? Probably just North Dakota games, Duluth games, and a few of the other teams that broadcast all of their games on local TV.

I've complained year after year about how bad Western & NCHC.tv have been during Western home games. Forgetting to give us volume when the game starts or when they return from a break. Horrible echoes. The ice being whited out.

Yes, the broadcasts can get better if we could ever get on local TV. But, the improvements last night were noticed. Well done Western!

There were a ton of second hand tickets on Stubhub going for cheap. My guess is a lot of season ticket holders and sponsors couldn't (or didn't want to) make the game. I arrived at 6:30 and the student section was packed plus there was a line wrapping around the building to get in still.

If we can just clean up the defensive mistakes, we should get another W tonight.

Seems like we always start behind at Ferris, let’s not play from behind tonight.

It’s aggravating that we’re having defensive breakdowns when our entire D core are vets.

Just can’t happen.

A little O/T but I sure hope that when the new arena gets built, that WMU athletics doesn't screw this up. KEEP THE STUDENT SECTION on one side of the arena and expand the number of seats available to students. Don't let $$ dictate this. If we have more students interested in the program and attending games, accommodate them and make more student seating a priority. This is the most successful of all of the athletic teams at Western and the students want to own this.

I have more confidence in Dan that I have in most university leadership. WMU has a long history of getting in it's own damn way, but Dan does seem to prioritize the student experience well.

I have seen that a few lunatics had “no new arena” signs

I don't think fewer students will attend if their seats are moved to the end where the visiting goalie defends 1st and 3rd, which is the typical seating arrangement with most Universities. They will get better attendance catering to the wants/needs of the corporate ticket along with tickets sold at a higher price, yet offering premium seating/service.

For whatever reason, the students stay for the whole game but can’t stay for more than a half of football.

It’s puzzling.

A lot of good games on tonight around the NCHC.

Eager to see how Nodak looks against a real team tonight after playing basically a JV team last week against Manitoba.

Didn't get to see the Friday game, but it sounds like we took our foot off the gas and Rowe let in a couple muffins again.

We did, looked like we were skating in slow motion most of the game.

People around here blaming the Ferris rink, but like I said, Miami sure didnt have any problems. Had it not been for a meltdown in friday's game, they would have won both games going away.

We just did not play well and earned what we earned, a tie.

Yeah, blaming the rink is nonsense. It's not new to the coaches or most of the players. I get that it's basically a youth hockey rink with nice seats, but that doesn't effect the game itself.

RE: Ferris State @ #12 Western Michigan
Went to the game, my first at Lawson since 2015, which was also the season opener against Ferris. Was such a great night. Place was packed and was overflowing with students. We passed a bunch of students leaving as we were entering and they were mentioning "we need to get here at 5," so I assumed they were being turned away. I did not realize they allow them to stand around the concourse, which is a brilliant idea. They didn't do that when I was a student.

I also enjoy how they break out attendance by student and ticketed nowadays, I wonder why they do that. There has to be a business reason for it. Noticed there were plenty of empty seats in the corners and sprinkled throughout the sideline.

Lawson is super loud, no wonder there are signs all over the concourse offering free earplugs. The PA volume is way over the top (but tolerable) and the fans do their part too. It's 2023, we don't need to be hearing Warrant's Cherry Pie on the PA. WMU needs to improve its PA music quality. It has always been bad.

Took a walk around the concourse and enjoyed seeing all the trophies out there. Certainly better than the alternative!

Was very happy to get a season schedule poster to add to my collection. I am a GW men's bball season ticket holder and the school saves schedule posters for the donor club, which is pretty pitiful.

Anyway, was very happy to make a trip back to Lawson and Kzoo. Had a mediocre dinner at Junglebyrd, happy to get into it more if anyone cares to hear. Had a nice drive through campus on the way to Lawson, was great to see the new student center from the outside and to see all the new buildings around Ring Road. Brings back lots of memories, good and bad, mostly fond.
