He could go winless and our "leadership" would not fire him.

Just criminal for those carpetbaggers to ruin MY and my fellow alum's program.

And congrats to Western (once again).

You guys have had several QB's the last few years that are much better than any QB we've had in the 1-A era.

I hope this doesn't come across as me rubbing salt in the wound or anything, but man I feel sorry for MTSU football fans. I have lampooned Helton as being "our Stockstill" from time to time when we fail to show up to an important game, but the two really aren't close. I don't know how you Blue Raider diehards tolerate this level of mediocrity every year. Is it really going to take your President/AD/Stockstill all "aging out" to see meaningful change?

Dwight Dasher was pretty good. Set a few bowl records, IIRC.

Seems like the first half the MTSU offense was more of a traditional Stockstill type game. Hand offs that don't fool many defensive players and then trying to convert passes on short or medium distance on 3rd down, with the QB scrambling.
Then in the second half they switched to sets with double splits of receivers on both sides close to the edges. This opened up the middle and the offense seemed much more effective and Vittiato was making some throws and moving the ball. The speed of tempo was much faster too. Not sure why they waited so long to try that. Penalties and mistakes were mostly responsible for not scoring more.

Yep.

It's been a few years, but JSU fans totally get what MTSU fans are going through.

We spent 13 seasons under Jack Crowe. Went 87–57. Never had a losing season. Won four conference championships. Sounds awesome!

Except that two of those four conference championships were our first two years in the OVC, which was WOEFULLY bad at the game of football at that point. Both years, we proceeded to get embarrassed in the first round of the playoffs.

Five years later, we finished with the best record in the OVC, but were ineligible for the conference championship and the playoffs due to APR penalties.

Two seasons later, we won the fourth conference championship. But not really. We back-doored ourselves into a three-way tie for the title, and didn't even get a playoff bid out of it.

When we finally fired Crowe (which was more of a non-renewal of his contract... we didn't actually "fire" him) a certain segment of fans and the general public told us how stupid we were to let this "successful" coach go.

We hired Bill Clark that year. His first season, we went 11-4 and blitzkrieged our way to the FCS Quarterfinals, losing a close one to EWU only after our starting QB went down with an injury.

Yep. It was such a mistake to let Crowe get away... 07-coffee3

Embarrassing and humiliating performance by my favorite university. Congrats to Western and thanks for reminding us that a university can actually CHANGE their HC from time to time and still produce quality winners in CFB!!!! During the 18 years of the Stockstill regime, Middle Tennessee has produced only 4 or 5 teams that performed up to or beyond expectations. MEDIOCRITY is a contagious disease and the only cure is CHANGE!!!

I think Crowe had two years left on his contract when we let him go.

Clark had a good year before cashing in at UAB. Then they got canceled. To his credit, he stuck it out and helped revive the program. If McGoof had still been there I think they don’t have a program today.

After Clark we promoted John Grass. He won a bunch but was never going to get any further in the playoffs than the first round other than that one run to Frisco. He certainly wasn’t the guy to lead us into FBS and we rightly parted ways two years ago.

RichRod is 60 so I don’t see anyone hiring him away. If he keeps it zipped I think he will be here until he retires. Hopefully we will be seen as a quality G5 power and will get a decent replacement who can move us forward.

We also have a mediocre futbol coach (251-227), who was hired in Feb. 2002 with 2 Sun Belt titles and just one NCAA appearance.

But yall do have good championship tennis and golf teams.... usually. ?

All joking aside, I do feel for you guys. Don't get me wrong, love beating you guys every year but a strong MTSU is good for the rivalry and good for the conference.

With that said, from what I saw last night, MTSU has good talent and could still turn it around and be a contender for the conference championship game. You've had a tough schedule so far so let's see if they start rolling as the conference season continues.

The only way out of this disastrous tenure is to finish with double-digit losses, when our admin have no choice but to fire Stockstill. They will let him "retire" with $millions, however.

If we get to 6 wins, we'll be headed to The Bahamas again. Our prez will make sure of it.

We are in the middle of a huge fundraising campaign. Our old leaders don't understand that by changing coaches we would quadruple the amount being brought in. At this point, we must use some of the Build Blue money to buy out Stock.

There are even rumors flying that Brent Stockstill will take over after daddy "retires" 03-banghead

MT has talent. You must have some pretty good recruiters. I see a very dangerous team--if they can get it together. Jax State game could go either way.

The problem is I actually agree with a lot of you saying we have a decent team. I’m really worried that we’re going to start beating up on some people and limp to a 6-6 finish. We all knew Bama, Missouri, WKU and Liberty were likely losses. CSU was a toss up in pretty much every MT fan’s mind. Now we get into the manageable part of the schedule. I fully think we get to .500 and Stock gets an auto-extension which is the absolute worst thing that could happen to our program.

We're going to have a coach to die of natural causes/age and still have eight years left on his contract.

The depth of incompetence and failure by this university is immeasurable.

I almost never even read the boards anymore (this one or Western) as I have better things to do.

But beating Middle AGAIN has brought me out of my Saddam Hussein hidey hole. My beard is out to Ted Kaczynski levels so I do look like Saddam when he came out hands up.

Just to laugh and laugh at Middle. Every time I get mad at Helton for losing a game we certainly could/should have won like the Troy game I want to just give up on Western. Had no excitement to go Thursday night but a chance to beat Middle drug me up to the hill.

If I was in charge of the HAF (Hilltopper Athletic Foundation) I'd send my Middle counterpart money to keep Rick Stockstill as head coach down there.

As frustrating as it is being a Western fan at times we will pull the trigger on a bad coach. Very few programs in the country would have fired a guy after only 2 season unless he went winless and we did that with Goober Sanford Jr. Helton loses games he shouldn't but he's eons better than Goober Jr was.

Middle gives a mediocre coach a lifetime contract and from what I understand he keeps pretty much his whole staff intact forever. I could be wrong but that's my impression.

As down as I can get on Helton I do realize he's had to replace staff after staff in his last 5 years. That's what happens when you have offenses like we've had. We're never going to go undefeated but by god it is fun to watch our wide receivers. I can't believe how bad Middle's wideouts were. They used to have studs at that position.

We lost 3 guys off our O-Line to P5 schools in the offseason. Somehow we've been able to keep Reed off his back. I have to tip my cap to Helton. We've lost multiple very good running backs in successive seasons to P5 schools but somehow have scratched up a couple decent ones out of whats left. Even though Taywan Taylor and Nicholas Norris aren't walking through that tunnel ever again we have some pretty good receivers under Helton. And we've lost multiple receivers to P5 schools as well. That's just part of the game right now.

Something is off with Reed's accuracy this year. If he is able to fix it we will have a chance in every game here on out. Somebody said problem with his calf and unable to push off. I don't know. He can still throw a rope on occasion but he's missing on stuff he never missed on last year.

I know this is too long to read but my tl;dr is Go Coach Stockstill you rock.
