RE: Aresco statement on SMU and expansion
UNT UTSU Memphis make the most sense for mWC. Then pick off Zaga. 17/18 team conference with a hybrid pair. That would effectively finish off the American as a top G5 conference.

I guess I can quote part of the article without getting in trouble or banned: So, some or most of the blame can be spread around and not placed solely on Aresco's shoulders

"While the conference showed interest in WSU & OSU and Aresco was invited to give a presentation and visit the schools. there wasn't enough support within the AAC membership to go further. The strain of travel from places like Boca Raton, Fl. to Pullman Wash was too much on athletes as well as cost. If the geography had been different, maybe this would have been a no-brainer, Aresco to The Athletic"

Everyone wants to pile on Aresco. He tried to make it happen. The schools have to be on board.

Arresco is garbage and should be fired immediately. What has he done? He’s lost UCF, Cincinnati, Houston and now SMU. He couldn’t poach the MWC teams to make us relevant, he’s done nothing but make us irrelevant. We will be looking up to several G5 conferences soon.

He’s over his head and should be fired!

Don't forget this all started with UCONN. There's an alternate scenario where Aresco does his job and has UCONN hire a Dan Hurley and a Jim Mora a few seasons earlier. Then when Big12 dissolution histeria begins, the AAC is looking much different and most importantly AAC would not have had loser momentum.

So much of the realignment the last 5 years has been all been based off momentum and perception.

so much goofyness in this thread. Aresco put together a conference that got 4 of its members elevated to "P4" conferences and has been the top 5-6 conference altogether even when it looked bleaked. He can only do what he is able to do but yet he still manages to raise the conference and put the best teams in place together.
He can't write everyone a check for an insane amount of money like some appear because the budget is not there but he still outperforms everyones expectations. some of you are just bitter.

What has he done? He has not raised the conference, he’s put a lead weight on it. Read Stl Wave’s post a few spots up. He nails it with UCONN and the negative momentum.

Being considered the top "G5" conference since its creation and being the first place conferences look for when it comes to expansion means he did something. There really is no debate. They guy doesn't have a magic bean stock or a money tree he can shake and pull 30+ mil out of but he is no doubt one of the better Commissioners out there.

we are not going to compete with a conferences that have payouts well over 30+ mil that is a pipe dream.

F'ng dolts.

Red rover red rover, send ECU on over.

Memphis will then cave and join the SBC too.

Some of the Sunbelt members on this board sure are a miserable lot. They don’t want to join us and instead hope that we have to take a pay cut and join them.

You may get your wish, Reggie.

FWIW, We apologize for Reggie . . . ..

And the SBC apologizes for Texas St in general. Please take them from us. The SBC is continually trying to improve.

The PAC-2 can live off their old conference money as members of a 2-team football conference for 2 years, and pull off a reverse-merger with a west coast Olympics sports only conference to keep the conference technically alive as long as they need. They can keep up the verbal game of trying to revive the PAC while they try to angle to get into the Big 12. And in 2 years if it doesn't work, they get the best of the MWC (no exit fees) and merge with the AAC to form the western wing of the best of the rest conference (and the MWC remnants join the Sun Belt).

The MWC can vote to dissolve itself and then all 'join' the PAC2. No exit fees - no waiting.
While true .. the waiting allows them to not bring along the bottom schools that really pull the MWC down.

They only need to bring the minimum number needed to dissolve the conference. It think that means they can dissolve and cut the 2 worst....

They need to get on with it and do it under the PAC name then go ahead and take the best 4-6 AAC schools in the Central time zone - expanding West and that conference would easily be THE best G5 every single year.

AAC membership told Aresco 'No' to the AAC west expansion so as far as I'm concerend it's every man for himself.

Because ESPN wouldn't pay for it.

What other G5 conferences got poached and their commissioner cut them a deal.

Over his head.
