They would be a basketball centric school in a conference where nobody really cares about basketball. SMU, Tulane, and Rice fit the academic profile so you start there. Add in the regional fits of UNLV and Nevada and then stop to reevaluate. If Cal and Stanford are all in, you vet out Boise and Fresno. They are great athletic fits with solid fan bases but might be tough for the elitist to swallow.
First, there is no PAC culture left.
Secondly....SMU, Tulane, and Rice have very few fans and ratings. No offense, just small private schools.
So yes, if you care about academics sure invite them.
If you care about people actually caring about your conference, having people at your games, and people actually tuning in for you games than you need to take the best athletic programs.
This is where the PAC has screwed up for a very long time and it has cost them. ACC about to do the same. They make they decisions based on academics and things that don't matter. That's how you end up with Wake Forrest, Vandy, Northwestern in your conferences. Teams that don't bring little tv value.
The SEC and now Big 12....take the best athletic programs. Those conferences live.....the academic conferences die.
But sure take Rice and either die OR no one cares about your conference.
