UM Campus updates: episode 15
If you haven’t been seeing these updates President Hardgrave is doing a good job setting a positive tone about the progress on campus. Here is a link for the latest episode talking about some in progress and planned brick and mortar projects.

Also, if there are any UM education grads out there interested in a restart of the Ed Alumni Chapter we will be working to fill some board and committee leadership and volunteer positions. DM me with your contact info and I’ll get back in touch.

We took a break before Covid and it’s time to reinvent.

Hardgraves and Veatch aren't exactly the most dynamic speakers, but as I said about Veatch, at some point we have to start giving him credit. I have constantly criticized Veatch, but on his watch, we have had both baseball and both women's basketball hires (jury's out on the current hire), LB renovations, the Boise series, Arkansas 2 for 1, Penny and the school beating the rap in the Wiseman case.

Sometimes the prettiest girl isn’t available but when it’s dark the not as pretty girl tries harder. I think Hardgrave is proving to a very good compliment to the foundation Rudd built. Blue skys and rainbows ahead.

I’m going to get in trouble with my example.

Hardgrave seems like a really good guy, maybe a really good fit for the university. He seems so amiable, I have confidence that he is the type of person that alumni and boosters would be comfortable with.

He is for sure growing on me.

I agree. I think what hurts him the most is that he's following someone who was a very dynamic president. Hardgrave so far to me has been more of the traditional type of president that most usually are. But ends up looking worse only because of the level of involvement from Rudd.

The people bashing Veatch have no clue how hard it is these days to be a G5 AD

I will say that the Student Athlete/ Student Housing on South campus will be HUGE in recruiting for ALL sports!! This facility can't open quick enough IMO.... When this facility opens it will help Memphis recruit at a much higher level in most all sports.

Those seem to be million-dollar unanswered questions. I'd really like to know too. Getting these two completed for the athletes is a huge part of the recruiting piece going forward.

Wish we could convince UT to build a Med school in Knoxville and U of M get the one here. Its almost as if UT has it here just to keep Memphis from getting ahead.

Memphis is starting/has started a med school in Jackson, but it's an DO program and not MD.

Or maybe not...

This article from 2018 says they're "looking at it".

Seriously? UT established the med school here after a Nashville school moved here and merged with another group in 1911. The first version of what is now the UM was founded in 1912.

What possible motivation would UT have to abandon the med school here and spend billions to build something equal in Knoxville?

If there were any designs or hope to mature the idea of a medical or OD school in Memphis or Jackson wouldn’t it be mentioned in the new UM 5 year strategic plan? Not sure if it’s cost or political pressure but at least for the foreseeable future I don’t think it’s on the table. Rudd’s recent tweet seemed to suggest the same.

Hope I’m wrong and please anyone with info please post.

Anyone have the 2021 130 page master Park Avenue Memphis Rising plan? Please post.

I think it shows 3 housing building complexes that bids have already been let which will likely be a partnership paid out over time as an auxiliary budget meaning rent. Those likely will break ground by 2025.

The Academic Success building is planned next to those three. That will likely include state funds with a UM contribution.

A soccer/track stadium and additional soccer practice field, a new plaza separating it from FedEx Park. A new open air covered field turf for football. Upgrades in training rooms, weight rooms, media rooms, technology, a new Hall of Fame and Marketing? Building. All of that falls within a ten year span launched in 2021. Some will be paid out of fund raising. Anyone seen a number toward progress? What was it..$200 mil?

The entire Park-Getwell campus will be transformed over time. All housing rebuilt, new mixed use and housing added. Old Kennedy hospital buildings renovated or replaced with research and academic buildings. We need a trolley system to connect Park campus to Main campus.

Everyone should appreciate that the UM and FedEx are the largest two economic driving engines in the Midsouth when all facets are considered. Support every advancement and Capitol improvement planned for athletics and academics.
