Shades of Gilligan - Sailor Rescued After Months at Sea

Sailor and Pet Dog Found Alive After Being Stranded in Pacific Ocean for 2 Months

Quote: An Australian sailor is recovering after being stranded in the Pacific Ocean for two months — with just his pet dog for company.

Sydney native Tim Shaddock, 51, and his dog Bella were rescued last week after setting off on a 3,000-mile sailing trip from Le Paz, Mexico to French Polynesia in April.

A few weeks after disembarking, their catamaran was damaged in a storm which also knocked out all of Shaddock's electronic devices, rendering him unable to contact anyone for help, reported 9News in Australia.

To survive, Shaddock told 9News he used his fishing gear to catch food — which he ate raw — and collected rainwater for hydration while he and Bella waited to be rescued.

I'm betting that dog helped him maintain his sanity.

Something is very fishy about it. I googled the guy and he was already semi-famous for switching to a raw food diet which he claims cured his cancer, and setting up a raw food company. Isn’t it a bit coincidental that he survived being stranded at sea by eating raw fish?

I think he’s full of carp.

You know she did. If I was ever in such a situation I'd want my German Shepherd with me. She is a calming influence and as loyal as it gets.

Not carp but maybe ahi. It's the Pacific, not the cement pond.

Meh, I have no reason to suspect there's any more to the story than has been presented. More than anything I'm glad the dog is OK.

I dont believe anyone can survive three months adrift at sea living on rain water and fish. I just don't.

I don’t believe switching to a raw food diet cured this guys Stage 4 cancer either, but he also claims that.

I read that the dog was Mexican and followed him around, even out to his boat, so he took it with him. When he was rescued, he realized how much red tape he would need to go through to take the dog with him to Australia, so he gave the dog up to one of the hands on the boat who said he would give it a good home.

Makes sense I guess. Still, quite the bond those two had to have made out on the open sea.

So it's harder for a Mexican dog to get into Australia than for a Mexican human to get into the U.S.?

This.... and I don't care HOW much red tape it took... the dog quite literally helped save this guys life... and he couldn't be bothered with the paperwork?

You'd think that the government would find some way to expedite the process for what could be argued was a 'national hero' and 'truly A man's best friend'.

Maybe Americans are just too attached to pets.

In the early reports, it made it sound like his electronics were damaged.

No he says he was actually in contact with his family the whole time, but chose not to send an SOS.

The legs supporting this story are getting shakier by the minute.

Well, this character is an odd duck, seemingly getting weirder the more he talks. Spinner of tall tales, a self promoter. Wonder what his motive is or if he's just nuts?

Wonder what the Aussies think of him?
