Athletic: UCF’s breakneck realignment rise, and what might come next
"College football arguably has UCF to thank more than anyone else for the upcoming expanded College Football Playoff"

A little humble pie: South Florida had a much quicker ascension to a power conference and holds a record that probably won’t be beaten. If we are using “P” terminology, we cannot ignore the original Power 6 Conferences of the BCS era.
UCF’s rise should have been quicker than it was because:
UCF was playing in the Citrus Bowl in the 80’s as a 1-AA program. That is a huge head start considering FLA only had three 1-A programs.
Had they not rashly quit the Sun Belt and invested more into basketball they probably would have been in the original C-USA and in-turn, the Big East circa 2004.
They were overzealous and held out for a Big East invite straight from independence and weirdly joined the MAC football, only to end up in the C-USA.

I believe the terminology used back then was BCS and Non-AQs. Chris mentions South Florida briefly but obviously he's talking about the current P5 makeup.
I don't recall anyone using the Power 6 terminology, seems redundant to have a BCS label and a Power label.

You're right, technically it was Power Conference, not Power 6. They didn't have P5/G5 split terms like now. The emphasis is on "power" not the number of them, and South Florida had the quickest ascension.

This was the perfect chance for them to rebrand to the Citronauts and they didn't do it!

USF vs UCF is apples to oranges. Sure, USF got into a BCS conference in a shorter period of time. However, the program as a whole accomplished nothing. UCF's rise checked off every box along the way, including conference championships, BCS/NY6 wins, and now a P5 stamp. Accomplishing all of that in such a short period of time is what is impressive.

Disney Tech is impressive, no doubt.
But they can't beat Satterfield ... which bodes well for the Bearcats.
