Jack Cavanaugh retiring
According to JMUsports.com, Jack Cavanaugh who has been the public address announcer for JMU football is retiring.

I've really gotten used to hearing his voice all these years and I associate his voice with JMU athletics. Very comforting and familiar sound that I feel fit JMU perfectly all these years.
It's certainly going to be strange not hearing his voice, but hope they can bring someone in that will fit JMU in the way Jack has all these years.

Agreed. His voice is a part of the experience and it will be odd to hear someone else over the PA. He will be missed.

Posted position lists pay as $40/game. Maybe they already have a perfect candidate in town who is retired and doesn’t care about the $. If they don’t have someone informally lined up already, that listed pay rate is astounding. We will get what we pay for!

they'll probably throw in a convo pass to sweeten the deal!

I have to admit I'm shocked it is that low. For a live announcer with attendance over 25k that is disgusting.
As a voice actor, that is absolutely unacceptable. I expected more from JMU.
You are absolutely right... we will get what we pay for. There's no way we get someone who is a seasoned professional. It will be a retiree or an alum that is doing it for the fun of it and would probably already be going to the game anyway. There's a slight chance we'll get lucky and get a voice we can live with, but I seriously doubt it.
I'll say this: if it's the guy doing the MRDs and on field stuff, I will throw up.

Thanks to Jack for his service. I'm hoping we can get someone that can inject some excitement into the stadium. In stadiums where the PA is jacked up, the crowd seems to respond accordingly.

On a similar topic - do we pay Buch in basketball, or the former players that are part of the TV broadcast for the football games? - of do that do it "for fun" and love of JMU?

funny enough, I ran into Buck at a bar in nova. Had a good chat with him. You will find no better ambassador for JMU than Steve. He loves doing the hoops and football broadcasts.

Hope we can continue to utilize Buck.

I would be absolutely shocked if we didn't. They are getting broadcast on TV, so they have to be getting paid. Definitely more than the announcer is getting.

I doubt we pay them much if anything, but I have wondered......

He really is the best.... Shame on whomever for letting him and Chenier walk the past few years on the Wizards broadcast (not sure if this is Ted or NBC). They were great through what was mostly two decades of crappy basketball.

As a local fan of DC sports fan that was annoying. I guess they believed the ratings were down due to the announcers, not the loosing team.

They replaced them with younger talent. Whoever was calling the shots decided they were too old.

Ah I recall there was some discussion about the PA announcer last season and that someone different handled some of the games. No one seemed to know what was up at the time but sorry to hear now that it was because of illness. The guy who took over came across a little goofy if I remember right. Glad they are doing a search, and yeah, $40 per game does seem pretty low/cheap but I have no idea if that's actually fairly typical.

Evidently low but not absurdly low as we all kind of assume? What a weird market.

Quote:In general, McCartney estimates that pay ranges from $150 to $250 per professional sporting events, and $30 to $100 for college-level games — but it could be more or less, depending on the size of the market. (Most announcers declined to discuss compensation.)

What a legacy. I didn’t realize he had been doing PA for that long, but now that I think about it I haven’t heard another voice at a Football or Basketball game in my life.

No matter who the replacement is or how good they are, it won’t sound right.

I can see myself tuning in to games on lazy weeknights during the winter for what will likely be a train wreck the next few seasons if Buck/Phil are on the call...this current announcing crew? Hard pass unless Poole ends up scoring close to 30/game. Which isn't that outlandish of a possibility.
