24-25 Football Season. 4 Conference Champs with a good Bowl match ups
I wonder if anyone has thought about putting this in place for the 24/25 Football Season

6 Conference Champs make it in the 12 Team Playoff. That would leave 4 Conference Champs not included in the playoff.

Why not have those 4 Conference Champs play in 2 of the best payout Bowl Games. This would give the Conference Champs that don’t make the playoff a meaningful bowl game to play another conference Champ.

Probably because those meaningful bowl games prefer brand name schools that bring lots of fans and tv eyeballs regardless of their records.

I think it makes sense to have those other 4 champs play each other, but the market is going to determine whether those matchups should be played in a “best payout bowl game” or not. As a general matter, the higher paying bowls have consistently shown that they would rather have mid-tier SEC or Big Ten teams than any G5 teams.

Because the best payout bowl games do not want them. At all.

And, because the MWC champion would rather play the sixth place PAC 12 school and the AAC champion would rather play the eight place SEC or ACC school.

Great idea though for the Cure Bowl, Boca Raton Bowl, or the New Orleans Bowl.

How meaningful will a non-playoff game be if a participating team is hit by player opt-outs and coaching departures?

What I've proposed in the past is if the 12 team CFP was the top tier in postseason, the next tier would be 9 bowl games featuring the top 25 teams, 4 champs that missed the CFP, and top X number of at-larges needed for 18 teams (1-5 teams depends on number of ranked conference champs). That way, roughly top top 30 teams are involved in a primetime postseason matchup and it gives the other G5 champs a shot at the big boys.

These 9 games + 4 CFP quarterfinal games could be played around New Years over a 6 day period (avoids Sunday). 2 games per day as standalone games with games kicking off at 4-5 PM EST and 8-9 PM EST except for New Years Day, which gets the 3 CFP games.

If bowl tie-ins are a concern for the 9 bowls, each bowl game can get 1 bowl tie-in except the Citrus, which would be B1G v. SEC. If the tie-in isn't used by a conference (say the AAC has their champ in the CFP and no other teams close to being ranked), it becomes a 2nd at-large for that bowl matchup. Maybe let the CFP committee select the at-larges and determine the matchups after the tie-in slots are filled.
