Pour one out for Steve Irvine...
Probably the best beat writer we have had in the modern era, and after today is no longer employed to do so.

Hope he finds work doing what he loves again soon.

Could UAB not hire him in some marketing/ reporting role to write the school’s athletic releases for football and basketball? No clue if that’s a real position but if we have a guy on the inside pumping out stories from the source that would be amazing

UAB doesn't do things like that. Marketing is right up there with janitorial services and parking lot resurfacing management.

Steve and Drew were by far the best in the modern era. A few clunkers in the mix like Birdsong. Solomon Crenshaw was well meaning, wrote some really good articles, but I really miss Steve and Drew as beat writers. Hopefully, Steve finds a good job covering sports sooner than later!

Look, no doubt - hate on UAB marketing/SID as much as you want. I'm not going to stop you or argue on that. But you are absolutely wrong here.

Wrong, because they've already done so in the past - with Steve Irvine:

It was probably only a freelance situation while he was doing radio commentary and it probably won't happen again.

But you are still wrong.

The last thing we got from Dudley was around May 11 or when Shaver pledged. I guess he was covering HS sports instead

I walked in a convenience store and the newspaper on the counter was the Tuscaloosa paper. <shrug> We don't have one any more. Strange world.

RE: Pour one out for Steve Irvine...
When a paper is loaded with op-ed’s and it’s mainly to tell everyone in the state how much you hate them, folks won’t buy that paper anymore. When they(Al.com) stopped putting UAB stuff in the sports pages 15 years ago, I no longer needed to get one. When I was in high school, I used to have to get Tuscaloosa news for political articles for my government class because my teacher wouldn’t accept op-eds with nothing informative or factual in the Bham news.

Irvine has been the main constant in regards to UAB sports news for the 20 years or so I’ve cared to keep up with columns or recruiting.

I was speaking generally about the leadership and direction of the UAB sports marketing department.

They are not effective.

I didn't research the employment history of Steve Irvine and knew that he freelanced for UAB.

I'm not wrong, you are just ignorant of the point I was making.

The blame usually falls on the person failing to make their point obvious. I excel at that skill.
