It is good news, however why couldn’t this be built in the heart of town? Specifically the vacant lot near downtown on Lincoln Highway (near bank and Michoacana ice cream) would have been exactly what downtown needed. I guess the railroad tracks or lot size must be the issue. But if this goes in that would kill a hotel ever going into that spot. It is crazy to me that no development has happened there. Open land in the heart of a city should never sit for over a decade

Because near the interstate and near all of those corporations (who will probably be the bulk of the users) and future growth out there is important.
The Hampton Inn is on Annie Glidden near the I-88 toll booth. Heck, there was a Days Inn or something out there in the 90s too.
Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if some chain restaurants (similar to those located along Peace Road and Sycamore Road) start to pop up out there as well.

The hotel COULD be coming to DeKalb. Not a sure thing yet. But, yes, this is great if it happens. It would have been great if the hotel were closer to campus. The location you suggested is perfect as the campus is basically across the street. It would be great for visitors needing to go to the university or even to a sporting event. No matter where the new Hilton branded hotel goes, I think NIU should offer bus service to the campus.

Meh. A better hotel room inventory would be great for Dekalb, and any Marriott property is desirable, but why not put it on Lincoln Highway, or if on Peace road maybe just south of Lincoln Highway so it can also benefit our major corporate tenants like Meta?
The Shodeen apartments + hotel on Lincoln would have really changed the look and feel of downtown, fingers crossed that still happens.

Where would you build a hotel, want to stay? Where there is things to do, places to eat or an area with limited choices, especially at night, and vacant business?
The expansion along Peace Road contributed to the demise along Lincoln Highway for businesses and allowed for new real estate/housing to support those new businesses.
Maybe they should just spend their money and build one near Greek Row just to help the area out.
And this isn't just a DeKalb thing. This has occurred in countless areas across the country.

This hotel will likely be approved at tonight’s DeKalb town council meeting. It will be built a little north of Lincoln Highway right by the airport and a five minute drive from Meta and all of the other businesses just south and north of RT 88. The franchise owner for Marriott is the same guy that owns the two Hilton properties on Anne Glidden. I think he knows what he is doing in terms of the location, and where to spend his money.

I hope it doesn't make a true downtown/Lincoln Hwy hotel less likely. Seems as if that would be helpful in reinvigorating that commercial area.

Can you guys get real for a minute? Shame on an investor who doesn't look at things from your perspective or the desire "to help out" downtown or Greek Row. Since you believe doing so is such a no-brainer, why not step up and do that yourself? Obviously this guy believes that location (which has access to I-88) and is near an industrial area that DeKalb is also trying to grow, has advantages he believes makes it a good investment. JB04 mentions the nearby railroad and lot size as potential problems but still thinks "It is crazy....that no development has happened there", while randyfens must have forgotten all the posts and discussions about crime, violence, and excess low-income housing having made the Greek Row area undesireable.

FYI my Greek Row comment was sarcasm.
But I am sure the thought of that location to rejuvenate that area too crossed the minds of others.

It would take a Sybaris to rejuvenate that area.

The last thing Greek Row needs is more venereal disease.

I'm sure they got other plans for that spot, layered somewhere into their master plan.
https://www.cityofdekalb.com/206/Comprehensive-Plans
With that being said, a very nice hotel is being built in a budding area of DeKalb. The developer did their due diligence and thought that was the best place to put something like that.
So, why not be happy that a form of improvement is coming to our beloved DeKalb. Your opinion varies from there's, but in the end, it's their investment and their decision. I'm just happy it's one coming to DeKalb.
