The gold checks mean that a company has paid Twitter a lot of scratch (I think $1000/month) to be verified and get certain perks.

The blue checks mean that someone (usually an individual and not a company) has paid $8/month for verification and perks. I'm not even sure how the PAC was able to do that if they have a business account. And if they still have a personal account that's funny on several levels.

It doesn't mean anything at the end of the day, but it IS funny how the PAC took the cheap way out and how it matches the public perception of their media deal negotiations.

Dang Elon. Well if people are willing to pay then congrats to him.

PAC should have gone the same route as the B1G and ACC based on this.

Verification started after a lawsuit by then-St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa who had been impersonated with a fake Twitter account posting inflammatory tweets. People thought it was him making light of drunk driving.

But since then, people have incorrectly taken verification of identity to mean validation of opinions. "Blue-check" is sometimes used as a term of derision, with an accusation of privilege.

I think Elon fell into that trap too with his $8 demand. Verification wasn't supposed to be a privilege for the well-known, but information for everyone else.

Same, don't really see Twitter wanting a business, non-profit or special people to pay a small fee is a "social" issue. Seems like a business issue. Now, men in women's sports, Title IX, that is a social issue.

His business, he gets to do what he wants. Twitter was run as an NGO for years, it either goes away (my choice) or it makes a profit (Musk's choice).

Yes, he is permitted to misunderstand the reasons that verification began in the first place. It's not a good idea to do that, however. Who will be the next Tony LaRussa filing a similar suit?

Before tearing down a fence, it's always good to understand why the fence was put there.
