RE: Rice football recruiting - class of 2024
I’m not going to mention everyone we are following, or every online tweet I see that mentions a potential transfer coming to Rice. But I did see some Akron DB starter has been contacted by Rice. Akron was 2-10 this past season but their defense wasn’t the reason.

More noteworthy was the fact that we hosted the Buffalo grad transfer QB on a campus visit last weekend. Someone else can post his bio and stats.

From ESPN's Adam Rittenberg:

Quote:Buffalo QB Cole Snyder is in the transfer portal this morning as a graduate. Multiyear starter has 5,304 career passing yards with 32 touchdowns.

I'm definitely underwhelmed by his stats. Let's shoot a little higher.

Same here. He'd come in to be AJ's backup. Not saying Padgett is a world beater, or that we shouldn't be trying to attract a proven QB, but I don't see a single 2023 game from Snyder that was clearly better than Padgett's last game, at least not vs FBS competition.

I guess the coaches concluded Jenkins is nowhere near accurate enough?

Oh I really doubt that. I think Jenkins and Padgett will battle it out next spring. I'm presuming that Jenkins needs more time to learn the system well. I think the coaches simply like having competition at QB, like any other position. History also tells us that we commonly end up playing our backups by the end of the season, unfortunately.

Coach Settle running backs coach is very active in the portal. At least one transfer is visiting this weekend. I think early signing day is 12/20 so we might get a better idea how active Rice will be in the portal because the prep class is small.

According to The Roost he was committed as a preferred walk on.

Good pickup and a real need (punter). Was stuck behind a really good punter at Penn State, and had offers from Arkansas and Virginia (and also was recruited by Clemson and Duke). Top 5 nationally ranked punter in high school.

I assume he had an issue with the coaching staff as I don't think he was injured - he just never played.

He's a big loss.

Andrew Mukuba, S, Clemson has entered the portal. He was a teammate of Sean Fresch at Austin LBJ. Perhaps Sean can tell him good things about Rice? IMO he'd be a great person to take Dunbar's place. I can only hope. Not sure we can offer enough NIL, though.

This coaching staff has no loyalty. I hope Padgett throws for 400 yards against Texas State.

RE: Rice football recruiting - class of 2024
If you want to really see what has happened to college football go to the website On3 transfer portal. It ranks players in the portal by their star rankings, school, position and NIL deals either where they are now or where they have transferred to. Many of the top transfer quarterbacks have deals above $300,000 including some that Rice are following. The 2 running backs from North Texas have deals above $100,000. Players from the Ivies are out of reach that a few years ago might have given Rice a sniff. In reality we all know your degree has more value for years going forward, but the dollars being thrown around are insane. Don’t know how other players would feel if the guy lined up next to them is making bank and they are eating Ramen noodles. We never hear if Rice even has any NIL deals more than a player able to sell his jersey online, but it’s just another way that we are falling behind, nd maybe we should. There are at least a dozen guys in the top 300 that are being followed by our coaches and are following them as well. Most are honor roll students at their respective schools. Lets see what happens.

If you are not bringing in established quarterbacks with college football experience at this point, you are doing it wrong. Those are just the facts.
