A Memphis and West Virginia rivalry could be stellar (and nasty). The cultural, racial, lifestyle and political differences between the two fan bases could not be more different. Tiger vs. Mountaineer games would be "made for TV viewing."

I watched the video (and likely the game years ago). It seemed Pitino was displeased with Cronin when the two men shook hands at game's end. What was that about?

Yeah I recall back then there was talk about Clemson, FSU, Miami, GT all looking to split off - had the B12 taken Louisville and Cincy alongside WVU, then FSU and Clemson probably also leave. Shortly after the Maryland/Rutgers move, it came out that the B1G were also in discussions with UNC, Duke, GT, UVA, FSU, Miami.
Had FSU and Clemson decided to leave instead of signing on the GOR, there would be no ACC today probably.

Pitino and Mick are BFFs.
Yep, Mick had Rick speak to one of his UC teams during a practice session when Pitino was out of coaching. Mick credits Rick with his growth and development as a young assistant coach under Pitino at Louisville. He also credits Bob Huggins when he was an assistant at UC.
To bill's comment...I chalk up the exchange after the game as awkwardness of the pupil beating the teacher. Also, both of these men were/are competitive as hell.

It didn't seem confrontational or negative, but it did appear a bit awkward (as you note).
