I hope not. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a guy who's had HC experience, although I suggested Kellen Sampson.

Morrell and McKie both sound promising, esp. Morrell (altho I think he likes where he is), but we need to remember that Sander's rolodex bulges like few in the business.

Yes, this likely sets us back again - barring some "home run" hire. But we all know Sander has that club in his bag. He's been lining up his shot(s) in the background for a while. We didn't foresee Forbes coming; we may not have a clue on the next one, either.

I think Morrell, Kerns, and McKie all make sense as well. Would prefer someone with HC experience though.

Bet Sander already has a coach lined up - of course going through the right processes to make it official.

Now Sampson is a very interesting name for sure!

You may be right or close to it. I doubt that Doc waited for this afternoon to start calling people.

I would prefer someone also with some head coaching experience but if he goes the way of an assistant somewhere does anyone know anything about Steven pearl? And that's a sincere question I don't know anything about him other than he was a gritty hard-nosed guy when he played without a lot of talent and he does have the pedigree if he has any of his dads coaching chops

One consideration for hiring BJ Mckie is I think you might insure some continuity going forward because I think Joe Huguely would stay on the staff and if Mckie were to be successful and move on like most coaches at this level do at that point Huguely would have more experience under his belt to step up and take the head job

RE: BREAKING: Oliver is gone
I think it reasonable to suggest that this is going to happen quickly based on Dr. Sander's past record.
March 13, 2015 (the Friday after the SOCON Tournament) Bartow is released.
About March 16 Sander and Nolan interview Forbes at Wichita State.
March 30, the Monday after Wichita State is eliminated from the NCAA Tournament on Thursday,[/i] Forbes is introduced as coach.
Possibly the "search" has already occurred.

Familiar with Dennis Gates at Mizzou?

I mean I guess if we going down that road.
Coaches hired same year as Oliver with worse winning percentages:
Dwayne Killings - Albany
Solomon Bozeman - Arkansas Pine Bluff
Nate James - Austin Peay (Also fired today)
Reggie Theus - Bethune Cookman
Levell Sanders - Binghampton
Patrick Sellers - CCSU
Tony Barbee - Central Michigan
Gerald Gillion - Chicago State
Stan Waterman - Delaware state
Jeff Wulbrun - Denver
Tony Stubblefield - DePaul
Marty Simmons - Eastern Illinois
Stan Heath - Eastern Michigan
Matt Crenshaw - IUPUI
Alvin Brooks - Lamar
John Aiken - McNeese State
Ben Johnson - Minnesota
Rashon Burno - Northern Illinois
Jase Coburn - Portland State
Tony Madlock - South Carolina State
Greg Young - UT Arlington
Leonard Perry - Pacific
Matt Figger - UT Rio Grand Valley

Now I guess name coaches from that year that have been wildly successful, you know since they have access to the transfer portal and all....I'll help ya out Pat Kelsey (who had rumblings of interest at ETSU the year the incompetent AD hired Shay) and Kim English....Ohh all those coaches are still employed, outside of Nate James.

RE: BREAKING: Oliver is gone
I would doubt greatly that Dr. Sander only took into account Oliver's win/loss record as the reason that he was released. My guess would be that based on his past experience evaluating coaches and programs that he felt that things were just not going to get any better going forward and that he couldn't take a chance on another season of low expectations and poor results. Yeah well another coach buyout and a football team hemorrhaging money due to yet another poor buddy system hire from Carter...But Doc has proved he can find gems, hopefully that's the case this time.

In Sander we trust. (Frankly, I'm not sure what the alternative would be.)

Good stuff here from Doc, candid as usual. There was a lot more factoring into the decision than just wins and losses. The program was just so obviously headed in the wrong direction with no signs of turning it around.

I think there was no alternative. Unless we want to lose 20 games a year and constantly have players out with "concussions ".

Sander rather tactfully expressed what Oliver was unable to accomplish:

“That they have a plan, that they can communicate that plan, that they can get the players to buy in, that they have enough experience they can really run the schemes that put our players in the best possible situation to succeed, but also for (players) to develop this connection to the university that lasts a lifetime.”

Don't think this guy is a Sander whisperer, either.............but maybe he has his finger in the wind enough to know who he's been calling and talking to:

BTW..........the video story on WCYB was slightly different, in that he responds positively to a question about player turnover being a factor.

RE: BREAKING: Oliver is gone
Morrell has been mentioned in every search since Bartow was fired and it seems like a lot of fans have thought he wasn’t up to snuff. His success at AVL speaks for itself though and the local ties are interesting. Coming to ETSU wouldn’t be a big career move for him though. Slightly better than lateral? He might be on a higher trajectory than a Socon job.

Yeah, his name is always in the mix, but I think this time makes more sense - and it's WAY better than a lateral move salary-wise. But still........ Sander is driving this bus and no point in us flapping out metaphorical gums too much in the meantime. But of course that's just what sports discussion boards do.

And to me, that was the biggest red flag. Year 1 he pretty much got rid of Vonnie and Silas, then none of the freshman panned out. Year 2, we had 7 players on senior day. Oliver brought in decent transfers, but his HS recruiting was horrendous, and every player was out with a "concussion" throughout the season. Terrible roster management.
