Doesn't hurt to play a local (VA) team with ODU ties. Though it's kind of weird that our D3 game is a regular season game, but our D2 game is an exhibition. lol

I get that cost may be a factor but the somewhat recent addition of non-D1 regular season games on our schedule is vexing and something that I would very much like to see stop. If it is money-driven I would rather us play one less home game and take a buy game at an ACC or SEC school.

Agreed. Playing non-D1 as regular season matchups just screams "low major". Id rather take the money as well. Especially since Wood says that's the reason we cant seem to beat JMU on the court these days. Id be happy to get rid of VWC, take a likely loss to NC State or someone, and start whooping JMU (and VCU) again.

Agree. Looks like Selig is taking the spend less approach as opposed to earn more. I'll take a loss to an ACC team any day rather than beating a D2-3 team. I do not want our name associated in any way with lower division teams.

As much as I would love to have an increased number of P5 opponents on the MBB schedule, this isn't a new occurrence. When was the last schedule that did not include "buy" games? One of the hardest schedules I can remember (2007-2008) still included UMES and SC State.

UMES and SC State are still Div 1 though. Not all buy games are div 2 or 3.

As much as Id love to play a P5 team, its hard enough to get 1 of them on the schedule, much less multiple. A lot of teams play these types of games and many of our peers have multiple non FBS games.

That does not make it OK. I realize the landscape has changed and the days of home and home deals with P5’s on the regular is likely dead and buried. We either need to go on the road more and collect checks or play more G5 programs that are wiling. The A10 schools acting high and mighty isn’t helping things but we are not helping our situation either playing sub D1 games in the regular season.

Its 1 game out of 30 that may actually be bettef for our metrics than playing a bad MEAC team.

The schedule for this year is really solid. We dont need to worry about 1 D3 game

Id just as soon play one less game. Makes the optics better and potentially saves some money. Or Maybe save season ticket holders a few bucks for one less game.

The optics for who? I cant think of anyone that should care about the “optics”

Not to beat a drum but A10 schools that don’t want to play us because our NET/RPI/FICO Score isn’t great. P5’s that get scared when they leave their immediate zip code. As recently as five years ago we would have had a collective conniption if we schedule a non D1 school in the regular season and we openly mocked CUSA schools that did it. An exhibition game against VWC or CNU is fine a regular season game is not a good look. You may not care and that is fine. It annoys me and I wish it would stop. I’ll still be in my seat in The Ted though.

I feel the same way as ODU2K1 on this matter.

There are a lot of other D1 teams out there that aren't bad MEAC teams that ODU should be able to get home and home games scheduled with. Most all of them are in the same boat that ODU is regarding this.

Recruits and the ncaa selection committee. Looks desperate for what should be a consistent top 100 team to be playing non D1 competition. Maybe I’m old school, but save that for exhibitions. Seems like a ploy to pad the win column or that you can’t fill a schedule with D1 opponents. We almost never did that in the non D1 era until the past few seasons except in very rare circumstances. I don’t see the A10 teams we recruit against putting that weak competition in their regular season schedules. And FWIW, I think this is a good schedule overall. Just talking about the one game and the new trend to have non D1s.

I still remember the Syracuse pay game fondly. A chance to upset a P5 and fill the coffers is always worth it IMO.
