Is it possible to play a game after your conference tournament (non-postseason Turny)
Is it possible to play a regular season game after your conference tournament is done that isn't a postseason tournament? I ask because I noticed Gonzaga has board favorite Chicago State scheduled on Wednesday, right before the WCC Tournament. To avoid possible conflict with the WCC Tournament (hey anything is possible, Gonzaga could have to play a games) and to better keep themselves engaged because of the week and a half down period between the WCC Finals and the NCAA Tournament, wouldn't it make more sense for them to play that game Thursday or Friday of the week after next, i.e. a few days after the WCC Final? This way they can stay sharp for the NCAA's.

In 2021 I remember there was some discussion of added games like this among bubble teams. IIRC, those games were shot down because they were not previously scheduled. Now, if the game is postponed from a pre-tournament date I do not know if that is still true.

In 2011 Saint Mary’s added a game against Weber State that took place after their respective conference tournaments, ostensibly so the Gaels could avoid a long layoff before the NCAA tournament. But they lose to Gonzaga in the WCC final and beating Weber wasn’t enough for an at-large bid. So unless the rules have changed, it’s possible as long as you have room on the schedule and can find an opponent.

St. Mary's also did it in 2009 by playing Eastern Washington

Do non-P6 conference tournaments make money for their schools? I realize they generate revenue for the cities where the tourneys are held, but are they money makers for the conference?

It appears to be allowed - I think the Big 10 teams at least considered this the year the tourney was at MSG a week early.

I think the WCC should move their tournament back to have their championship game on Saturday if they are concerned about rust. Then again if Gonzaga leaves for greener pastures their conference championship will be irrelevant anyway.

The rules appear to say that regular season games must be played before the NCAA Championship Game or before the start of a conference tournament that determines the AQ for the conference.

The rule about conference tournaments did not exist in the 2010-11 manual. It may have been revised as recently as 2021. It may be that they were closing what was considered a loophole.

If the Conference USA basketball tournaments make money, it’s only because they have an arena with a curtain in the middle to separate the courts. Their cost to run one location instead of two has to save money.

Yes, usually its when a game gets cancelled though. Gonzaga played Seattle one year after their conference tournament. WAC teams that lost a game due to NEw Mexico State cancelling their season could schedule a game if they want.

Yes. Teams even played games after the “post season” tournaments back in the day.

It's the center-piece of their TV deal, and it's good exposure for the conference and the schools on TV as well that has financial implications well beyond the dollars and cents of the event itself. So yes, in more ways than one.
