Earlier in the year, I had said that it was going to be dropped if they failed to make the tournament
They have Not made the tournament and that got me thinking about the future of baseball
So I asked the coach at Eastern who had told me this information
One more thing, I am not the son, nephew, brother, cousin of anyone at Eastern
I am simply a dedicated fan who was able to get in contact with both players and coaches
Over the years I have developed enough trust between me and them that they have began to tell me things some of which I can speak about and some of which I can't
This specific instance about baseball was something I was told I could be vocal about
On February 4th, I got a call from a coach at Eastern who told me amongst other things that if baseball does not make the tournament we are dropping the sport
Since then I have asked around about it no one has given me the definitive Yes or no
This is usually what coaches do when I ask them about private information that is true
The days after I texted with the coach about how this impacted the school
Today, We found out Eastern was not going to be making the tournament (actually we knew for a while because of how many games they lost, but it was confirmed today)
I contacted the coach again today to see if any talks have begun about dropping it now that the team hasn't made it
The coach told me he is never heard anything about that and that I'm lying
I went on to show him the text messages where We both talked about it
He said that I had photoshopped it
He went on to Tell me how stupid that sounds and a specific quote from him was "Are you ******* joking? Your a dumb*** if you think I said that"
He berated me for an hour
I have no idea why but he did
So to be honest with you guys, I don't know the future of the program
It seems like I can't give out any information
Because half of the info I get is wrong and makes me look like a real ass
So I think I'm done with this forum
My word has aged like sour milk
I'm sorry for giving bad info
At the time I believe it was true but right now I don't know anymore
Sounds like that coach was pissed because you took their speculation as fact and made it public. I suggest keeping info like that private. You'll anger fewer people that way.

Not to mention scaring away his recruits.

RE: Official EMU Baseball Thread 2023
Vannzee made some predictions on his Twitter yesterday that, if people are willing to talk options about our potential baseball coach, seem like fun talking points.

I agree with Nickle that Maki should be talked to.

Vannzee's speculation:
Someone with Mississippi State ties (obvious connection to Weatherbee)
Ryan Kelley from Wayne State
Craig Rainey from Adrian
Adam Eaton from Michigan State (former MLB player and MAC player at Miami)
Brandon Inge (former MLB player and volunteer assistant at UM)
Paul Noce from the USPBL

From least likely to most interesting:
Brandon Inge. Sounded like his time at UM was out of convenience more than anything else. That coaching staff left and he's not returned to college coaching.

Paul Noce. I know that he has the pedigree as a coach but I don't think he comes across as a "trending upward" hire. He's been out of college coaching for a decade at this point.

Mississippi State candidate. There are three "candidates" from this pool that are current assistant coaches that were in much smaller roles during Weatherbee's time at MSU. Two are P5 assistants and therefore *probably* making more money in those roles than they would at EMU. The other is at Louisiana. I'd guess they'd get a phone call but who knows how high their interest would be.

Adam Eaton. This would be a "splashy" hire as far as name recognition, but with one year of college coaching experience I still think it is unlikely. The recent trend for this administration is to hire coaches with some head coaching experience (to varying levels of success).

Craig Rainey. He is both the baseball coach and AD at Adrian (plus an alumni of AC), and may be past the years of moving up to seek success at higher levels. They've had good teams under Rainey and he certainly fits the mold of previous head coaching experience.

Ryan Kelley. This would be my first call if I were in charge. Plenty of obvious reasons - successful head coach, recruits local, after 15 seasons at D2, we can be the perfect opportunity.

I have some other thoughts but figured this was at least a fun place to start.

A good rule of thumb is that if there is no link to it on the web, leave it off the board.

Thank goodness. About 3 years too late.

Please avoid the MSU coaching tree. Thanks.

I don’t know. EMU tried this with Jay Alexander. Maybe a successful JUCO coach from the gulf coast?

I know nothing about collegiate baseball, but I can read stats. The Wayne State coach has a very, very impressive record.

If we love D-II here, here would be a great candidate IF he would leave WSU.

RE: Official EMU Baseball Thread 2023
Here's the problem with trying to get a guy that is a current P5 assistant and Kelley from Wayne State.
$$$$$$$

According to the 2022 Wayne State salaries report Kelley makes six figures ($112,000 + incentives).
According to the 2023 EMU salaries report Roof was making considerably less than that ($76,500).

Unless we're going to see a LARGE bump in the salary, most of the guys on the list Vannzee posted aren't going to be realistic options. I know the opportunity to be a D1 coach will be enough for some successful coaches at a lower level to take a small paycut, but in the specific case of Kelley it would be a substantial one.

112k at Wayne State. That's a lot. WSU has invested a lot into baseball. Real nice stadium.

Been following the college World Series.

All teams are basically sun belt except say Virginia.

It is tough to be great and cold weather school.

Really Steve? lol. The last snowplow state University to win the CWS was Ohio State, just a few years ago in 1966! "Oak" taking EMU to the brink of a National Championship in 1976 was truly ASTOUNDING, plain and simple.

Vandy won in 2014 and 2019. Nashville isn't exactly in the Sun Belt.

Lotsa snowplows in Nashville? They get a WHOPPING SEVEN INCHES of the white stuff EVERY YEAR FREAKING YEAR! Boca you usually make intelligent posts and I appreciate you, but to insinuate that they are on the same level as a Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin or Minnesota school strains believability. They are practicing and playing outside before any team in the MAC or B1G.
