I agree with Nickle that Maki should be talked to.
Vannzee's speculation:
Someone with Mississippi State ties (obvious connection to Weatherbee)
Ryan Kelley from Wayne State
Craig Rainey from Adrian
Adam Eaton from Michigan State (former MLB player and MAC player at Miami)
Brandon Inge (former MLB player and volunteer assistant at UM)
Paul Noce from the USPBL
From least likely to most interesting:
Brandon Inge. Sounded like his time at UM was out of convenience more than anything else. That coaching staff left and he's not returned to college coaching.
Paul Noce. I know that he has the pedigree as a coach but I don't think he comes across as a "trending upward" hire. He's been out of college coaching for a decade at this point.
Mississippi State candidate. There are three "candidates" from this pool that are current assistant coaches that were in much smaller roles during Weatherbee's time at MSU. Two are P5 assistants and therefore *probably* making more money in those roles than they would at EMU. The other is at Louisiana. I'd guess they'd get a phone call but who knows how high their interest would be.
Adam Eaton. This would be a "splashy" hire as far as name recognition, but with one year of college coaching experience I still think it is unlikely. The recent trend for this administration is to hire coaches with some head coaching experience (to varying levels of success).
Craig Rainey. He is both the baseball coach and AD at Adrian (plus an alumni of AC), and may be past the years of moving up to seek success at higher levels. They've had good teams under Rainey and he certainly fits the mold of previous head coaching experience.
Ryan Kelley. This would be my first call if I were in charge. Plenty of obvious reasons - successful head coach, recruits local, after 15 seasons at D2, we can be the perfect opportunity.
I have some other thoughts but figured this was at least a fun place to start.
