The Portal 2023 - Infinity
RUSH/PASS - YARDS - TD
Anthony Miller 9-54-2
Tony Pollard 31-159-1
Sean Dykes 15-346-3
Damonte Coxie 21-323-3
Kedarian Jones 8-152-1
Antonio Gibson 6-99-2
Calvin Austin III 17-315-3
Darrell Henderson 87-482-5
Gainwell 4-91-1

Obviously, some players having really good seasons will also go, and a lot of players will stay whether they are having good seasons or not.

The point is, that when posters say that so and so must be no good because they weren't getting playing time at their old school, it can be true, but it is often garbage to think that.

Gibson had 6 catches his junior season and barely made a dent the first half of his senior season. Gainwell had 4 carries his freshman season and broke one for 72 yards and a touchdown. It would be crazy to dismiss both of them just because they didn't play a lot or have great stats at their previous stop.

How about Henderson? Does anyone doubt that it would have been a feeding frenzy for him after the freshman season he had? Does anyone doubt that he would have listened, coming off of getting the 3rd most carries behind Taylor and Pollard?

How about Coxie? By our standards, a very highly ranked recruit, he was 6th on the team in receptions per game, with 21 on the season.

This is only running backs and receivers, but it is the same across the board. The issue with Silverfield is SO FAR he hasn't recruited or found the same talent, even though he recruits at a higher level than Fuente and at around the same level as Norvell. That is the greatest mystery.

Hopefully, he turns it around. If he doesn't, it isn't going to be because the new players are a bunch of bums because they weren't on the field for every play at their old school.

Are those stats the year before each player exploded?

Still say it's not a mystery at least with the running backs. It's an offensive scheme problem and Henderson, Pollard, Gainwell, Taylor, and Gibson would all perform worse in the current system compared to the numbers they put up when they played at Memphis. I've been going back and looking at how things currently are and comparing it to what I would see at least in the plays where they were breaking their runs. I picked some games from the last two seasons and what I saw is we are consistently terrible at upfield blocking. Like so consistent that even bad linemen should get it right more than what I saw. And by terrible I also mean I saw some running plays where none of the lineman went second level. And those weren't short yardage downs either. Decent execution of this type of blocking was rare at best. I don't think the current system is doing a good job of setting up this kind of blocking. And in turn we are seeing way fewer long runs.

A better OL coach might make a difference.

I hope so, though it might take more than that. My #1 fix going into next season was RS improving his decision making. After seeing that I changed my mind. Fixing second level blocking is my new #1. The poor quantity of that blocking was worse than the poor quality of his decision making IMO. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of his poor decisions got eliminated just from improving the blocking.

Gainwell redshirted that year so that's why he only played in 4 games. Anyone with eyes knew he was going to be electric.
Gibson was baffling to me that year because in the spring highlights, he dominated TJ Carter. Then, he never really showed up.
