Yeah, I have to imagine schools like UTRGV, which doesn't even have FB yet, were uneasily tugging at their collars when there was mention of the whole ASUN/WAC collab moving to FBS.

I don't think they are the ones dragging their feet. There are plenty of schools that started programs and charged straight to FBS, some pretty successfully. UTSA? Old Dominion? USF? UTRGV is relatively resource rich, and they have a nice soccer stadium to play in. They also have an enrollment over 30,000. You could argue they look more like an FBS school than anyone else in the conference.
I think we're probably talking about schools like Utah Tech and/or Southern Utah as schools who would hesitate on this.

Thank God. There are way too many FBS teams already. The last thing we needed was a whole new FBS conference.

I could see more schools from the ASUN/WAC to be called up in the next year and two to replace schools.

The WACsun is such an odd hodgepodge. I don’t see that group being sustainable long term.
If I’m on the ASUN side, I’d be looking to get into the OVC, or in UCA’s case, the Southland.

It’s fine for football and that’s all the AWFC is focused on. Otherwise, the ASUN is a much better conference than the two you mentioned in most sports. For example, out of 32 D1 basketball conferences, the ASUN is ranked 16th with the OVC and Southland at 29th and 30th.

UCA, UNA, Tarleton State and SFAU could still get into C-USA. Just cards need to lineup if and when the MWC and AAC gets raided. That means trickled down.

This announcement seems light on the actual details of the conference's plans.

Both Sam and Bryan's updates here line up with what I've been hearing for a while.
Basically, the 'move to FBS' part of this is very much more driven by APU, EKU and TSU than it is everybody else....and a lot of people outside of the WAC/ASUN do nnot want this to happen

The AD at Central Arkansas wanted FBS as well. I could see them moving up.

I imagine these three would jump at a C-USA invite?

Wow this guy is thirsty. Imagine if he put this much attention towards his own football career.

Sadly, these teams will never stop. They need to be part of the conversation even if they in fact embarrassing themselves and bankrupting their schools at the same time.

What I don't understand is APSU announcing the FBS goal. They have never acted like they wanted FBS in the past, why now?
It wasn't long ago they had non scholarship football. I'm not hating on the Governors, just trying to figure out their thinking.
Of course, My school, UNA is thinking long term FBS, but realistically not in the next few years. UNA and APSU are very similar schools in terms of size and budget, they are actually peer institutions.
I think the loss of JSU, after they came out of the same conference to join another, got people butt hurt and this is happening.
Side note..... and Matt Brown could do some investigating, I'm hearing the ASUN will announce up to 4 more new schools around the same time the new commissioner actually starts, and all have football.
