This is a fun team to watch and it is so nice to have a coach that actually knows how to make adjustments during the game. I am really happy with Coach B and what he has been able to build. It's great to have players that can actually execute the plays for a change too.

It might not have been pretty but I was proud of how they were able to beat Marshall without Vado and Wooden - or without any points from Tak. That kind of depth can take us a long way as long as we stay healthy!

Great win Dukes

The perimeter players intentionally passed the ball to interior players before just anybody chucked threes with 20 seconds on the shot clock

Is this not seen often strategy here to stay or we go right back to undisciplined chucking when an unnamed player returns?

Offrem has some nice looking open court moves, give that player the ball under the basket so he can goon the whole SBC

Yeah I hate to say it cause I love all our Dukes, but it doesn't seem like losing unnamed player has been the worst thing. Hopefully By reins him in a bit when he's back, I've been saying all year I think he'd be a really great and effective contributor if he just tightened up his shot selection.

Yes. Very good win. Also a reminder to the team that they have no more d3 teams left on schedule. They will have to grit it out to get to NCAAAT.

Great road series by the Dukes! The depth of this team is impressive. If we can build off our offensive ball movement, then the sky is the limit for us in conference.

JMU up to #48 in NET ranking with this win
https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball...t-rankings

From what I've been reading, margin of victory is also a factor in NET. That was part of the strategery going on at VCU to play buy games against weak opponents at home ... though it hasn't worked out so well for them.

IF we can keep this thing rolling and end up with a NET inside the top 40, would have to think we enter the discussion for an at large bid.

I don’t see us getting much consideration for an at large regardless of how SBC play goes with bad losses to Coppin State and Valpo alongside multiple OOC wins being against D3 opponents.

It’s awesome to see us rated this high and watching this team play. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to what we’ve been watching the past 20 years!

#48 puts us as highest SBC team in that ranking. Southern Miss is ranked #50.

In the newest KenPom ratings, we are ranked 71st (also the highest in the SBC).

I don’t think so. In addition to the 2 bad losses, JMU’s SOS is very weak. And the Sun Belt won’t give them many chances for quad 1 wins to enhance their resume. They won’t pass the sniff test compared to other teams hat have multiple quality wins and few, if any, bad losses. JMU needed to beat UNC or UVA to get in that discussion.

This coming week is a great chance to be #1 in the Sun Belt with 2 poor teams coming to the AUBC.
#239 Texas St (5-7)
#241 App St (4-8)

The path to the big dance is by winning the Sun Belt tourney in March and the structure really favors the top 4 seeds who only have to win 3 games. Seeds 5 through 10 have to win 4 games, Seeds 11 through 14 have to win 5 games.
A 14 team bracket is a bit unwieldy, but I like that it helps the top 4 teams that have separated themselves from the pack over the course of an 18 game conference schedule.

I can’t imagine the champion coming from a seed not in the top 4. It is simply too many consecutive games and too many upsets required for a dark horse to survive.

Agree on all points. For that illusive "at large" we'd have needed to only lose to the two ACC teams, played only one "less than D1" game, lose only one conference game, frequently win big, and lose in the finals in the SB championship game. We'd not only be in the talk, we'd be dancing. Being in the conversation won't get us in, it has to be clear cut. I remember the '11 - '12 Drexel team being left out with 27 wins and I can't help but believe the early season loss to Norfolk State killed them.

Its interesting ESPN elevated the App St game to ESPNU. Guess thats more about showcasing JMU. Could see a couple more upcoming games get air time too. USM and the home Marshall game would be good ones.

Those home games on any of the ESPN networks needs a full capacity crowd. The place needs to rock.

If we had beaten UVA or UNC and only lost one of Coppin/Valpo I think it'd be a little more realistic to think about an at large if we really go nuts in conference. As it is though, we might end up with a good enough NET ranking but then the committee will go "sure but who have they really beaten?"

We can always hope, but it does seem pretty much impossible. The one bright side is that if we really go nuts in conference then recent performance will be a big positive. Most likely just something we're hoping to build towards in the future though. A strong NET ranking this year will help OOC scheduling next year, and consistent strong rankings will especially help.

JMU’s SOS is just too weak to be a serious contender for an at large. Best stay focused on trying to win the SBC tourney and the NCAAT auto bid.

A good NET (saying JMU makes the NCAAT) might turn itself into a better seeding than a 13 presently projected for the SBC champ. At the very least (falling short of the NCAAT) JMU should be a strong candidate for the NIT.

Agreed, our only way in is the auto. Another nice advantage of finishing with a good NET or RPI this year might be improved OOC scheduling in the future.

Yeah- winning the conference tourney and getting a decent seed are our goals now.
NCAA first round upset probability by seed #:
15th seeds: 6.3%
14th seeds: 15.3%
13th seeds: 21.5%
12th seeds: 35.4%

Let's rip off a long winning streak to position ourselves for a 12 or 13 seed.

Yes, the moments where the team got sloppy and let Marshall back into the game was frustrating (for JMU fans), but let’s step-back and get real for a moment. The team is 2-0 in conference, with both Ws coming by way of road victories. The team is now 11-4 overall, with a Quad 1 win, and 2 of its 4 losses in OT, and the other 2 losses to ACC teams.

I realize some people will never be satisfied, and enjoy nitpicking, but this is a very good JMU MBB team. Hope the students and other fans will turn out for home games because this could be the year JMU and Coach By break through and go dancing.

Agree. JMU fans can be a rough group sometimes.

This team has great athletes but maybe not the best basketball players. However we're playing a "brand" (sometimes ugly) that can win a lot of mid major games and even some blue blood match ups should be get the opportunity in a few months.

This is a fun brand of basketball to watch. I hope the students figure it out and come out to support and enjoy "the show".

Maybe the person that does our scheduling doesn't understand how SOS in basketball plays out come late February.

VT current NET SOS = 173
VCU current NET SOS = 288
