NMSU played in the Diamond Head Classic in 2017 and as we know NMSU lost in the championship game to USC 72-77. And, NMSU was supposed to play in the Diamond Head Classic last season but requested a tournament change with ESPN due to the early start of WAC play and the short turnaround time traveling back from Hawaii. NMSU played in the Myrtle Beach Invitational in November instead.

UTA just about blew it with the turnovers at the end. They barely averted total meltdown. San Francisco is currently 85 NET, so it’s an impressive win. UTA looked inspired.

Tutor, what are you doing being up at 1:22 am MST? (I am assuming that but it says 2:22 am -- even worse.) I thought I was the only one who gets stuck on my computer late, late at night watching reruns on ESPN+. Anyway, it was a fine win for UTA. The WAC is looking fine overall.

After watching all the success other schools sustained, it was nice to finally contribute. We’ve had three games against tough competition where we lost by two possessions or less. I really felt like we were going to steal one somewhere in non-conference. I didn’t think it’d be San Francisco though.

If I’m up I’ll watch any basketball. Any association, any team, almost any level. After the USF game I watched Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College hosting Sisseton Wahpeton. And after that I watched a Turtle Mountain College game. Go Mighty Mickinocks!

I love watching Rezball!

It's just one game, but finally there are glimmers of hope that Coach Young's group of talented recruits is starting to congeal into a UTA team that can credibly compete in the WAC.

I wasn’t able to watch GCU versus Idaho State but was surprised at the score. GCU won but it was a close one, just 2 points I believe.

GCU struggled without Ouedraogo and a hobbled Blackshers. Not sure they can win the WAC right now as predicted in the preseason. Sam Houston appears to have the best team chemistry, but there is still a lot of basketball to be played.

UVU on a 10-0 run at Oregon. They look pretty sharp. Woodbury is looking absolutely in form right now. Haven’t seen that for a while. He can definitely be a force in the WAC this season. Good to see.

Edit: at the half, UVU is leading Oregon by 17. They haven’t played any amazing half of basketball, but have defended well, gotten steals and have run on Oregon. They are more athletic than I remember them being. Guys like Tim Caesar, Harmon, and Darthard have improved.

RE: 2022-23 WAC MBB Week #7
If Madsen can keep developing big men, they will continue to be a force in the WAC. Bandaogo played in 33 games on a good Akron team last season but wasn’t a real factor for them. He only got 12 minutes, 3 rebounds, and 3 points. He said he wanted a good big man coach and picked Madsen. Now he’s a starter, 11th in the nation in rebounding and 11th in the country in blocks, with 30 already this year. And he’s 8th in the country in double doubles. And I have to believe it’s primarily good big man coaching. If Madsen can draw potential like that and develop it that quickly, the league is going to feel it.

I get they are picked 8th in the conference because they lost the leagues best player, but they don’t seem to have dropped off that much IMO. They are a top 3 or 4 team this year. I believe they may return more players with significant playing time than any team in the league.

RE: 2022-23 WAC MBB Week #7
Oregon did their best to come from their 17 point halftime deficit to Utah Valley University, but their 3-19 shooting from behind the arc held them back. Despite giving up way too many offensive rebounds to the ducks and having Tim Caesar and Tim Fuller foul out, and having Bandago on the bench with fouls for much of the game, Utah Valley kept its turnovers fairly low and hung on for the 5 point win.

Woodbury lead with 24 points, 9 boards, 6 assists, a lot of drawn fouls, and very steady ball handling.

The win over the 56th ranked team in the NET is the best result for a WAC team this week and brings the WAC’s record versus the PAC 12 back to even at 4-4 this season.

The game got sloppy at times on both sides, but ACU handily won against a very scrappy Howard Payne 113-52. At least everyone got lots of playing time. SFA will be a tough game.

Southern Utah stayed with Colorado and lead 57-56 at the 11 minute mark in the 2nd. Colorado used a 13-0 run to pull away. The Thunderbirds cut it single digits in the final minutes but Colorado hit 7 free throws and preserved the win in Boulder. Colorado 86 Southern Utah 78.

So who won Tudor, Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College or Sisseton Wahpeton? And after that who won the Turtle Mountain College game?

Are these teams looking for a conference to join and do they play football?

Well, those team might be off topic for this forum. But suffice it to say NM State didn’t win yesterday versus a good Kent State team that we were perfectly capable of beating. But apparently we need some more time to see if the Aggies can play a complete game of quality basketball.

The other game not mentioned was Californias first win of the entire season over UTA.

The good vibes from the win over USF didnt last long. The lady mavs hung with #16 Arizona but couldnt get the win.

How embarrassing. Does our team suck this much? How to go from shooting nearly 50% to 30%. They must have been smoking California weed the last two days. I know Cal was better than their record, but I naively believed UTA was, too. Let's just try to forget this whole week ever happened. It looks like we were correctly predicted to be one of the worst of the WAC teams.
