Fun Belt Fan Committee - Ideation
This is an idea I've thought about for some time, but I want to see if there is interest in something like this.
I've always been fascinated with the concept of bowl committees and "pay-to-play" post-season basketball tournaments as I've helped organized a few amateur events in the past, but I've always wondered what would happen if a network of sports FANS put on these events - making decisions in the interests of FANS. What if fans established a non-profit organization, and pursued interesting projects with a goal to raise money to endow scholarships or sponsor our own fan-generated initiatives.
Some ideas that a potential Fun Belt Fan Committee could engage in?
- Create our own post-season basketball tournament, the Fans Postseason Invitational. Do a 16-team tournament where the first town rounds could be held at Marshall and ODU, and the semis and finals at JMU. Or opening rounds at Georgia State and Southern Miss and the finals at South Alabama. Or open at Texas State and Arkansas State and finals at ULM. The point being is to create opportunities for our schools and invite teams we are interested seeing and rotate the sites so everyone ultimately benefits?
- Create tailgating events at SBC championship events.
- Start our own TBT basketball team pulling the best from all the Sun Belt schools. Gives us an opportunity to come and cheer together for a team while building the SBC brand
- Invite graduated seniors in softball or baseball to come together to play in an All-Star series at the conclusion of a series. Make it an event at the host school. Challenge the Savannah Bananas to some Bananaball games with the SBC Senior All-Star.
- Someone on this board mentioned some weeks back about the idea of an SBC Marching Band competition. That was a new concept that a group like this could sponsor if there is interest.
- Create our own season awards? Sponsor our own traveling trophies?
I think the possibilities could be endless and can go are far as we are creative or as successful as it can be. Would this be something that you would engage or participate in if we established a committee and had Zoom or screenshared conference call? Would there be any interest in doing this, or am I missing reading the room on how active people would want to be in engaging and following their own sports fandom? What would be some other ideas worth pursuing or investigating?
