I get the analogy, but it's kind of different. If you ask for a Kleenex and get a different brand, you don't really care. If you want a Sprite, ask for a Coke, and get a Coca Cola, that would be a problem.

Would someone ever ask for a Kleenex and get upset when they got a real Kleenex because they really wanted a Puffs?

I've lived in NC 98% of my life and literally have never heard someone use the word "holler". I have family that lives in urban and rural areas too. Dang, yes. But holler, no.

I'm guessing you didn't live in the mountains outside of the App State area. My dad's family settled Beach Mountain and Banner Elk area and a Great (x7) grandfather worked with Daniel Boone... Holler is very common on that side of the family.

I grew up (near App State campus) calling everything a coke but switched to "soda" around 16 when I realized how silly and confusing it was to call them all cokes.

I grew up saying pop. I moved to southern Indiana after college and the everything is a Coke was real there in every restaurant I went to. There are some really good migration studies for the US based solely on certain words and where they are used. I remember one was lightning bug versus firefly.

I have heard that term "holler" as an area used out in the country a few times over here in the Tri-state area. It's pretty rare though. Use that term in Dothan, and you'll get some strange looks. More prevalent in like smaller towns like Ashford or Gordon.

My Dad owned a sawmill. I spent several summers in a holler with no wind cutting down my shade. Man that is hot. A job I got away from as soon as I could. It was always a holler. An area between two hills.

Wait….I forgot all about Prospect Mound at Moncus Park, which at 60 ft is now the tallest spot in LFT parish. Although it is man-made:
