ODU - 12/07/22
We are seeing improvement.
To provide prospective, these players did not have 5 on 5 practice during the summer
Therefore it has been a slow process to get the offense to be consistent
We all are happy with the effort and the team spirit plus the D.
We will not be successful if the offense is not more consistent and that development is on the coaching staff. It was a good move to switch from Rice to Nelson so let us give the staff till mid January to pull it together and the road trip to UNCW and CoC

RE: ODU - 12/07/22
It is too early to pass judgement on how team will ultimately turn out but I impressed with its intensity and its defense. An argument can be made that offense takes longer to gel and we'll be pleased with our offensive execution come February.
But allow me to vent. The offense Fischer has run since he come to Williamsburg is neither aesthetically pleasing nor likely to be successful unless our players are clearly superior to their players. Replacing any of our outside shooters with Ayesa is not going to make a material difference because we simply are not creating space for our catch-and-shoot shooters. Three men standing around watching two players pick and roll will not get them open. And I know in the UR game we had far, far, far too many two-man plays that ended up with Wight with the ball three feet OUTSIDE the arc.
If I wanted to watch static, one-on-one ball I would watch the NBA - which I don't! Offensively we have migrated from a Ferrari to a Gremlin in the last six years.
I'm a Tribe fan so I hope we can work this out. Thus far the team is performing well enough to get Fischer his 5th year and save us from paying three coaches simultaneously. I just feel our offensive woes are schematic.

RE: ODU - 12/07/22
I guess I look at it this way. If we were winning a ton, I would take ugly offense(like UVA has done for many years). But, even with that winning, it gets painful to watch. The UVA/JMU game from earlier this week was a cure for any sleeplessness you could ever have.
I miss the days of a great offense, occasionally upsetting a big-time program, and nearly always delivering exciting contests. I wish we had won at least one of the CAA championship finals, but I really enjoyed the way the offense ran. Clearly the defense was not championship level, but there was always a chance, at least in the final 6 years. I do remember during the fun year of 2009-2010, long scoring droughts that year. But once Marcus got settled into his role his junior year, basketball was exciting. Perhaps the new recruits coming in next year will lead to a more wide-open assist driven system. I vividly remember the prior staff wanting 20+ assists as a measuring stick. Last night, the team had 15 assists. I still cannot tell what the offense plan is even after 10 games. It seems clear that Wight, Dorsey and Nelson have enough talent to score consistently. But, the ultimate goal is still to be competitive in conference. Hopefully, Coach Fischer has a solid plan for conference play.
The team is definitely better than last year. But, it seems short of the quality at the moment to compete with COC and the top of the conference.

Right now, we're better than I thought we were two months ago. We're not better than I thought we'd be 5 years ago, but I don't know if that's a meaningful comparison. Despite any long or short term comparisons, losing to ODU was disappointing because it was a winnable game.
