Kent had a 4 point lead over Gonzaga with just under 4 to play, but didn’t score again and fell 73-66.

I was following this on the ESPN tracker. Of course my cynical mind starts wondering if some home cooking refs starting "stepping up" to avoid an upset loss on Zags home court. Or perhaps KSU just faded down the stretch and missed shots.

Unlike college football, college basketball officials are independent. The college basketball refs you see officiate a Big 10 game on a Sunday are many of the same ones you see officiating a MAC game on a Tuesday. There isn't home cooking in college basketball.

there most definitely is home cooking in terms of how games are called. the refs are not conference specific, but they are going to favor the home team at least a little bit in most games. that's not intentional, just the reality of being in someone's building and seeing things a little more their way. I didn't see a lot of bad calls down the stretch for Kent. They had a really tough luck play where Gonzaga missed a free throw in a 2 point game and a kent player seemed to secure the board but it got poked out and bounced right into another gonzaga player's hands under the basket and he laid it in and got fouled for a 3 point play-5 point lead-when Kent should have had the ball and a chance to tie or go ahead.

there was a bad call that helped decide the houston game when carry drive to the rim in a 1 point game w 30 seconds to play and was challenged by a houston big who missed the block and whacked him in the face but the ref didn't call it. the houston announcer crew admitted they dodged a bullet watching the replay.

refs do matter, but Kent has had three late leads on the road against top 50 teams and found a way to lose each time.

I never said there aren't bad calls that impact games. Any time the human element is involved there is going to be some level of error. Especially in something like basketball officiating where some calls aren't always black and white. I was more commenting that officials aren't out to get any team intentionally.

Here is what's interesting: The odds may be coming back to haunt Kent State basketball ... KSU fans have actually been spoiled, according to this graphic from the last 10 years. Pretty impressive company the Flashes are keeping going into the start of this season.

Kent plays a slow, defensive, hack em, swat em, if they beat you style. They run a full 25 second offense most of the time paired with decent shooters. They're built for low scoring, low possession games. When that happens, games tend to be closer.

RE: MAC Men’s Basketball Week #5 - (12/5 thru 12/11)
MAC goes 4-1 this Sunday.

Miami beats Calumet by 36.

Eastern Michigan was down 58-57 with 3:38 left, but only managed a last minute 3 the rest of way falling 67-60 at Niagara. Farrakhan had 21.

Akron gets 17 from freeman and Hankerson plus 23 from Castenada to beat Jackson State 85-72.

Bowling Green wins at Hampton 86-72.

Ohio lead by as many as 16 in the second half at Youngstown State. Then Brandon Rush got hot (game high 26 points). YSU made a game tying 3 with 1.9 seconds left. Long inbound pass was deflected out with 1 second left. Ohio lobbed it in to Wilson who powered up a shot which (cover your ears bulls fans) sat on the rim like a Leon Williams tip in before falling through for the 81-79 win. Wilson and Clayton each end up with 10 point 10 rebound double doubles. Jay.in Hunter with 17 points 7 assists and 6 boards. Freshman AJ Brown with 16 points off the bench. (I was at the Ohio game so I had a little more detail haha)

Good road win for Ohio. YSU good team this year. at Florida, Stetson, Chicago State and at Delaware left on the non-conference slate.

yes that was a good road win for us. built a big lead, held off their furious rally, and got the tip-in last-second win which helps to ease the pain from the Belmont loss earlier this year.

It feel weird associating YSU and good win together as they were so bad for so long. That said, yes it was a good win.

yeah it was weird saying it and thinking it for me too! but they were #86 in the NET before yesterday and they took our NET from 188 to 138. not that the NET means much in the overall scheme of things for MAC teams, but it still shows it was a good win. now, if we can follow it up on Wednesday against Florida...!
