I agree, it does sound like a large number. And think of many more millions watched the highlights on sports center or REPEATEDLY read the word “E Michigan” on the score ticker. Best advertising money can buy for the university and its alumni. (Btw, thanks to Steve for looking this number up! Interesting tidbit)
A good bowl game can get noticed by recruits who might be considering EMU. Especially transfers who are just starting to look at their options in recent weeks.
When I say advertising, I am not referring to athletic recruits. I am referring to a more general sense. Someone reads a resume for a job application and it says “Eastern Michigan”, the reader recognizes the name, doesn’t know from where but recognizes it, giving the applicant more credibility and value. Same thing goes for a prospective student- will associate success with a university who successfully won a bowl game. However random and trivial this is, it actually works. Best advertising money can buy.
I agree 100%. This is the "I like pancakes." "you don't like waffles?" bit.
You are talking one thing. I am talking another. Both things have merit.
Since we are in FB recruiting season, read that TRANSFER TIME, anything NOW could open the eyes of those who just entered the portal.
C.C. indicated that they are looking for some January transfers.

Has done a lot with minimal resources.
I just wish Mat Ishbia had decided to play MBB at EMU.
MSU was required to disclose Ishbia's and St. Andre's contribution to MSU that I was led to believe financed Mel Tucker's lavish contract. Mel's deal, however, is for $95M and Mat and Steve's contribution, while indeed hefty, is only $24M. The math therefore says that MSU, a public University is contractually obligated to pay him the remainder $71M on that contract.
It suddenly seems clear why MSU claimed "privacy" when asked to disclose such but did only when required by legal authorities.

if you ever wonder why there are so many bowl games - that 1.1 million number should explain it all to you.

RE: Potato Bowl
Has anyone seen any TV ratings figures for the Potato Bowl? I'm sure the 3:30 start hurt it some, but I've heard from quite a few people who watched it. I was really pushing it on my social media, though.

TOL / Liberty drew about 1.5M. They had prime time audience.

Hope a lot of potential recruits and students watched.
Bowl games are excellent, "free" advertising.

Steve, you speak the truth.
At least TEN not-so-close friends of mine who don't give a whit about EMU, or athletics for that matter, sent congrats to me the next day after the bowl win. It was astounding to me! Like Dan said, 1.1M viewers says it all.
Masttq insisted all along that a bowl would dramatically increase program interest and I resisted such an idea. I suppose that even at my advanced age, I need to revere the opinions of a college professor with a PHD, as I was apparently mistaken.

Hopefully this interest translates into enrollment. However, and I could be wrong, but EMU has some heavy marketing to do if this is going to have a lasting effect. For example, the game day experience needs to improve or what’s the point of joking the bandwagon?

The half life of a bowl game, even a nice win, is about as long as one of Britney Spears' shorter marriages.
It will stay in the memories of the more devout students, alums, faculty and staff, but soon fad for those who do not have a strong connection to EMU.
Where it has more immediate value is in the current recruiting cycle where we are still trying to fill slots now and in February. Any recruit with serious interest in EMU FB most likely watched the game to get a read on the program.

Lets not forget that it adds a trophy to the case.

As usual you have a cogent point, Professor. '79 pointed out the same issue when we signed Bates to the MBB program, yet little marketing effort or game-day improvement was expended. A successful product deserves better.

RE: Potato Bowl
I don't have exact numbers yet but right now it looks like Eastern was the best performing bowl for the MAC with well over 2 million viewers
And that was at the 3:30 slot
Just imagine if we had a 5,6, or 7 o'clock slot
