This game has been toned down ever since we moved it to Thanksgiving. It should have stayed in the October slot

It was Kumbaya for the first season or two of SBC, but the hatred runs deep from the FCS days. It's rearing it's head again now, but not at the level as before since both are pretty average teams this year. Make no mistake, there will be a lot of bad treatment stories posted here Saturday night and Sunday morning from both sides.

As a fan base, we started hating each other because we were the top two teams in the SoCon together. Usually the winner of our game won the conference and we were constantly standing in each other’s way for the post season.

Personally, I started hating them upon my first trip to Boone as a member of the Southern Pride Marching Band and having trash thrown at me by their students. That’s why I always roll my eyes when App fans clutch their pearls and tell the horror stories about their trip to Paulson stadium because they heard a GS student say a cuss word.

I hate App State because I want to beat them. I want to be better than App at everything and in every facet of what it takes to run an athletic department. This is due to an underlying respect for the program and the knowledge that beating them is an accomplishment. It’s completely different from my feelings for Georgia State where there is no respect and I wouldn’t care if they folded up their athletic department tomorrow.

Usually I'm quite excited to play App but this season has been...unfavorable, to keep it succinct and tactful...

1987 - App beats GS in the playoffs 19-0 in Boone, students write in the snow "You can't score"

1999 - App beats #1 GS in Boone 17-16, goal posts come down, students "accidently" ram the goalpost through the GS bus and runover pizzas left on the ground, it was a cold ride down the mountain

2001 - GS beats App in Quarterfinals

2006 - A freshman named Edwards wills App past GS in double OT in Stateboro

2007 - GS ends App's 31 game home winning streak 38-35

Lots of years in between the lower ranked team won.

2018 - GS beats No. 25 App in Boone, the ranked curse is real

2019 - Drinkwitz downplays the rivalry, GS beats App likely costing us the NY6 bowl that year

Both fanbases claim they are treated poorly when visiting, some from both claim they'll never visit again...

There is respect there, but the hate is real too. Marshall would likely be the same if they had stayed in the Socon.

Let's see, after Marshall left the SoCon & Paul Johnson was hired at GS; the rivalry really started to take shape:

'87 - I-AA playoff game in Boone, where App shutout GS & the fans wrote in the snow can you even score, or something along those lines.
GS joins the SoCon, and wins the 1st 2 matchups, before dropping 3 in a row & GS winning the '98 edition.
During my years of working with the GS football team (1999 - 2003), App was the only opponent that either had a winning record or at least tied.
- '99 App beat us while ranked #1 by 1 point, students rushed the field in Boone, tore down the goal post
- '00 - '02 GS won 4 in a row (played App twice in 2001)
- '03 - App beats GS in Boone, and down went the goal posts again, but this time as the App fans were taking them out of the stadium, they drove the goal post through 1 of GS's team bus door window, trampled our postgame meals (pizza).

2004 - GS blew out App in the Boro
2005 - App dominated GS in Boone
2006 - App wins in 2OT in the Boro
2007 - GS puts a crack in the Rock, snapping their home winning streak
2008 & 2009 - App wins 1 by a point and blew GS out in the other
2010 - #1 App goes down in an OT game in the Boro
App takes the next 3 in the series
2014 - GS 1st weeknight ESPN network game since the HUGO BOWL, someone thought it would be a great idea to handout to fans/students these vinyl cardboard eagle head disc, (see our academic logo) and GS's student section turned them into projectiles that rained down on the App sideline/field - as GS went on to win comfortable
2015 - 2016 - App took 3 in a row
2018 & 2019 - GS beat ranked App teams both in the Boro & in Boone
2020 & 2021 - App won

These games are usually hard fought, a lot of emotions on the field, on top of GS rarely wins in Boone & for a period of time App rarely won in the Boro.

App leads the series 20-15-1 (this is counting pre-WWII matchups); modern era only App leads 18-13

I kind of like it being the last game of the season, except for the fact that it's Thanksgiving and no one is there. If anyone should put the final polish on this turd of a season, it should be our long time rival from FCS days. Otherwise, slycat will have to edit this week's Jeff Goldblum GIF to make it bigger.

I like it at the end of the season. Gives something to look forward to when your team has missed some of its other goals. Win conference, win bowl game, beat P5, beat Georgia Southern.

It needs to be back in Oct.

It's likely to mean much less going forward with it being at the end of the season. Rarely has a game at the end of the season mattered for what would happen between us and App.

Here in SEC country rivalry weekend is for your in state rival, your traditional rival is earlier in the season.

Anyway about this week....Hail Southern and stuff I guess.

No App fan minds it being the last week.

Just because you have lost 3 straight to Georgia State and have a 3-6 record against them, doesn’t mean we have the same relationship with Charlotte. We are undefeated against them, so not only are we not in their shadow, we need some 100 SPF to protect us from the glaring sun. Let me know if you need to borrow a flashlight for Georgia State’s shadow. Seems to be pretty dark.
