Holgorsen's Proposed Annual "Week 0" Series Between Rice & UH
Last night, Dana Holgorsen was talking about UH's schedules in the Big 12, and stated that he wants to play Rice annually in "Week 0" starting next year.

He said that Rice and UH should have HEB sponsor it and market the Bayou Bucket as a Battle for Houston.

With the games taking place on "Week 0" there should be great interest, since both teams are going in undefeated with the season in front of them.

I think this would be a great idea. Since both programs will be going into it under their new conference affiliations, it would definitely have that extra pizzaz.

It will be a great spotlight for the Bayou Bucket. Has this been talked about much within the Rice Athletic Department?

We actually did this with UH when Hatfield was coach. Three or four of them were played in Reliant Stadium. It was always the first game of the season, if I remember correctly.

I think it’s a great idea. Although it might take a few seasons to work it into both schedules. Interesting to consider as to whether it would alternate between HRS and TDECU or have it every year at NRG. A local sponsor (like HEB) is a good idea and it might develop into multiple local sponsors if the series is successful.
To me, it’s a no brainer for Rice. Not sure about UH. With them moving up to the Power 5 and Big 12, it seems like there’s more downside football season-wise for them than us. Losing to Rice or even almost losing to Rice may not be advantageous to them in the rankings. That’s only a factor, however, if we get and stay more competitive than we have been this last… generation.

Yes, as long as it’s a night game. No 11am starts in August! And no Reliant - alternate home fields.

Both ADs and both coaches said that we should play each other every year, at the Bayou Bucket Luncheon in September.

Make it so.

RE: Holgorsen's Proposed Annual "Week 0" Series Between Rice & UH
HEB historically has sponsored the Battle of the Piney Woods between Sam Houston and Stephen F Austin. The series is coming to an end due to the FBS move for the Bearkats though Sam Houston is committed to playing at NRG annually going forward, where according to the Sam athletic department was responsible for 80% of ticket sales or nearly 21k tickets.

HEB may be tied to Sam’s involvement at NRG going forward since they’ve been involved prior. Kats host Air Force at NRG next year and apparently are about to announce a ‘24 game.

This as it relates to NRG games and HEB involvement more than the topical conversation surrounding UH vs Rice.

Good rivalries don’t get old - Alabama-Auburn, UCLA-USC, Michigan-Michigan St., USC-Notre Dame, Army-Navy, UT-Oklahoma, etc. are the highlights of most seasons for those teams even though they have lots of other rivalries.

If the game needs a sponsor, I’d look to Mattress Mack.

+1
When we did a Houston show with a segment featuring Mattress Mack, he hung out for most of the game with the UH fans.
But that was before Tilman.
I wonder how Mack gets along with Tilman?

This is a great idea! Buy “made in America furniture delivered today with no back-back-back order slip” and if Rice wins your purchase is free-free-free!
