GA Southern Pre-game
Has anyone done a side by side comparison of the two teams. Their defense isn't thT great, but curious how we will match up with our defense and their offense.

I grew up in Savannah going to GSU games. Used to go to Paulson and slide down the grass field on cardboard boxes like sleds. My mom, sister, and former best friend/former stepbrother are graduates. I always hoped JMU would play there so I could go down and tailgate with my brother, but he and I don't speak anymore. I really hope we win, I feel like it'll be my fault if we don't.

Here's a top level comparison on ESPN.

Stats wise, these are pretty even offenses. The defense is the big difference.

Clay Helton is only a few games in, and I'm sure is working on improving it, but the defense is GSU fans #1 gripe.

I reckon they like to keep to themselves. Suits me!

It took me no more than 45 seconds to register.

Damned if I could.

If you need help setting up an account, just shoot me a pm here w/ your username and password. We have run the board since 1997 and have had perpetual problems with spammers, and the settings to get an account are sort of a pain admittedly.

The activity on our board has really dropped since Summers was our head coach, he torpedoed us after a hot start in FBS in 2014/15 under Willie Fritz. We're just trying to get back to some basic level of respectable play. Probably won't be this season.

David Cool was a good player for us, he was our kicker on long field goal attempts. Mike Dowis handled the closer kicks, as he was more accurate.

Not sure if you made the trip down in 1987, but Tim Foley set the NCAA record at 63 yards vs. the Dukes that year. Ironically it was tied that same day by another kicker, and remains to this day the record.

I've made every GS-JMU game played. I expect you'll end up with win #2 in the series on Saturday. If anyone is headed down, pm me and I'll give you my tailgate spot, stop by for a cold adult beverage if interested.

Seems like a weird day for the kickers. David Cool goes 1/3 on field goals with his single make a 60 yarder. The JMU and other GSU kicker both miss a PAT.

Sports has a great way of connecting people. Maybe this game is the catalyst and reason to break the ice (and also rub it in when JMU curb stomps Ga Southern 02-13-banana)

RE: GA Southern Pre-game
It seems weird to think of GA Southern as an Air Raid team. They should get new uniforms, too!
Erk Russell was as old school as they come when he was their coach. He ran a triple option wishbone offense.
They had a great quarterback named Tracy Ham and renamed their offense the Ham Bone. They also had their very own running back
named Adrian Peterson. The Eagles were tough as nails and very difficult to defend. When you only played one team per year that ran a triple option offense
it was difficult to prepare for. Erk Russell was know also for his ritual of taking some water in a bottler from the mighty Reedy River next
to the stadium, to away games. He would sprinkle it on the opposing teams field for good luck. History lesson for you young ones.

RE: GA Southern Pre-game
We're going to clobber them. I just watched a bit of the Coastal/GaSo game, and GaSo's defense is _slow_.

Here's the thing -they're kinda big, so setting up a sustained running game might not work. (Or if it does, it'll take a while.) But we should be able to pick them apart. Whenever they go into zone, there are guys wide open, and in man (or against a fake) the guys in the backfield have all day to run.

I think we'll try a few runs to make them think about it, but that play where you show an RPO then toss it to the TE up the seam is going to make a lot of hay. (like this: https://youtu.be/1-n2AW0C8u8?t=5673) (or like this: https://youtu.be/S8_hkPyH-_4?t=136)

Anyone know what the deal is with the "GATA" on their pants?

Also, their coach was really hammering how great our run game was and I don't think said much of anything about our pass game. If they stack the box and play zone, Toddy is gonna eat them alive. Add in some RPO and end arounds. I had said earlier in this thread that if they focus on stopping the run and force us to pass we're gonna put up 50...and we really might by what their coach said. Granted, it could be misdirection, but if they really do sell out to stop the run it's gonna be a LONG day for them.

Most coaches/teams say the first thing is to stop the run and to establish it yourself, because without that you become one dimensional.

The other thing I picked up on though is a lot of the defensive woes for Georgia Southern have been missed gap assignments, and guys playing out of position. In one of the interviews, a player chalked it up to not enough trust in teammates and people trying to be superheros, so they get pulled out of position.

It sounds like something they are working on. They could be much improved for this game. Anyone remember how under Bob Trott it just seemed like the defense just suddenly "clicked"? Its not impossible that will happen for them also with new coaches. We can't expect this to be easy.

However I haven't watched tape, and if they truly are slower, then that can be a big factor also. Schemes and execution are part of the equation, but talent, fitness and speed/size are factors also.

I think that the big difference for JMU's defense is our interior line, namely #5 and #99. They are *so* dominant that they either shed their blocks, or need to be double-teamed so much that the rest of the blocking is undermanned.

Therefore, we can play with smaller/faster LBs across the board (pretty much big safeties), because there's no way to overwhelm them with linemen w/o letting the DTs destroy whatever play the offense was setting up. So we get a much faster defense that's able to close on receivers and collapse on the flats. Take a look at some of the games and see how the offenses can't get any kind of push, and the defense really just swarms to the carrier. That's because they're fast and the DTs just make running inside the tackles a non-option. They're that dominant.

So, we pretty much play vanilla zone and rush 3, 4 or 5 guys, and put pressure on the QB. There will be some deep throws, and a QB like we saw last week will see some success. But the bulk of their plays won't get anywhere, and I think we'll be okay.

On the offensive side of the ball, I think the first quarter is going to be the same kinda discouraging RPO stuff where we try a zone run and it's pretty much stopped. Then we'll make some throws to the edges and Percy will find some holes, and we'll pull away in the 2nd half.

I think something like 45-20 is likely.
