RE: AAC preseason Scrimmages & AAC media day
summary of day1 media day

full temple presser notes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8WE5Rr4-hA
- running 4 guard lineups -- (hints jamille at the 5,with 4 guard/wings.. hints the 4th guard in hicks... jourdain might not start)
- pg by committee- dunn, khalif and hyseir
-jamille the best low post scorer he has had
-khaliff an elite scorer but has to improve the other parts

note dunn talked like this was their last year and wanted to make it special.. dunn has 3 years of eligibility, battle has 2 .. i dont think either plan on using all of it

ecu
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzR2IpAw6Ac
- spends half the time talking about defense and wanting to be good on defense
- aware is one of the least experienced team in the nation
- using picked last as chip on shoulder

wichita
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVi-kzQRNnc
- porter and pohto are the anchor of the team
- picked 8th is putting a chip on teams shoulders
- james rojas & jaykwon walton standing out - both have really impressed
- porters " this is motivation to be picked 8th"

smu
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4oh0xQFBHs
- wanted a tourney capable schedule no matter what, didnt want to close any door
- no hard feeling towards davis, exit was respectful
- think zach nutall can be a star, tried to "coexist" last year with a bunch of stars, can reclaim the star power he had when he transferred to smu
- will be a big roster, but didnt sacrifice mobility

Wichita has really fallen in the estimation of the 'experts.'

Wichita's lapse can occur to any traditional power without the right coach. The difference between Wichita St and lesser programs is the Shocker's infrastructure (e.g., intense fan support and more than adequate resources) allows them to weather the storm and bounce back quickly.

I'm thinking a team like Temple or Wichita could use a guy like Gregg Marshall if they are serious about remaining relevant in basketball.

Temple's program is moving in the right direction with their current HC, and is likely to be a tournament team (NIT or possibly, NCAA) this year. WSU may or may not replace their HC at some point, but...

...the idea that either of these schools would hire Marshall after Wichita State fired him for serious violations could, it seems, only happen in Bizarro World.

Has Greg Marshall ever apologized, seeked help, or done anything to payback WS fans who put their faith in this guy. He needs to stay out of coaching. What has he been doing anyway ?? 07-coffee3

RE: AAC preseason Scrimmages & AAC media day

Agree with the commentators that this is likely to be a fun and exciting team to watch this year.

A few more notes from the Aaron McKie interview:
  • Damian Dunn is going to "have to do a little bit more" playmaking this year.
  • "The way we play, we play with four guards out there and one guy in the middle...and everybody has to be able to dribble, pass, shoot...and make quick, start decisions...sometimes it's Hysier, sometimes it's Damian, sometimes it's Khalif."
  • Temple will have to play point guard "by committee" when PG Hysier Miller isn't in the game. "We have a number of guys who...I'm going to ask to handle the ball for us."

Reading between the lines, the take home message seems to be that:
  • Rather than running the offense with a single PG/"floor general," Miller, Dunn, and (at times) Battle may function more like combo guards than they have previously, and will to some extent take turns running the offense.
  • While Miller (a PG in high school) may be the team's best playmaker, he may look to score and to share the playmaking responsibilities somewhat more often than most D1 PGs tend to do.
  • When Coach McKie referred to "a number of guys" who will be handling the ball in the back court, he's likely to be referring to players such as Shane Dezonie (2.4 assists per 40 min. last season) and Jahlil White (1.5 assists/game), who each had some experience playing as PGs in high school. Freshman Deuce Roberts (5 assists/game in HS) may also contribute as a playmaker. Roberts, who averaged 5.4 steals/game in HS, may earn additional playing time due to his defensive skills.

Hysier Miller seems likely to get plenty (25+ mpg) of playing time, but Coach McKie proved last season that he's inclined to experiment with multiple player combinations and to make whatever adjustments in his starting lineup may be needed.

Thus, if (for example) the backcourt trio of Miller/Dunn/Battle isn't as effective as hoped, it wouldn't be too surprising to see some early season experimentation with other backcourt combinations, such as Dunn/Dezonie/Battle, Miller/Dunn/Dezonie, or Miller/Dezonie/Battle.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Agree with Pesik's idea that, with Coach's emphasis on Temple going with a 4-guard offense and his emphasis on Jamille Reynolds, in particular, it seems possible that we might see a starting lineup such as this, with Nick Jourdain, Zach Hicks, and Kur Jongkuch functioning as key reserves. It's possible that Hicks could start at some point in the season, but he is valued as a "spark plug" type of player who can come in off the bench and provide an infusion of energy. Hicks' fellow wing Jahlil White was a key part of the starting lineup last season.

Miller-Dunn-Battle-White-Reynolds

Guards: Miller, Dunn, Battle, Dezonie, Roberts

Wings*: Hicks, White (White has started 16 games; Hicks was a 6th man), Thweatt

Bigs: Reynolds, Jourdain, Jongkuch, Okpomo

*Temple's wings tend to function like guards on offense & like forwards on defense.

Tulane getting a lot of hype this year. Don't go losing to >200 FCS schools again this year. Please. You can make the tourney.

RE: AAC preseason Scrimmages & AAC media day
update from today

USF
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNF3NCGGflc

- center russell tchewa integral part of offense and defense
- hope to be better transition offense
- tyler harris is major impact player for them
- hoping to have all 3 transfers have their best year yet (harris, miguel and bryant)

Memphis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6UYHb5a2HI

- likes the hard schedule to guage team early
- doesnt see memphis being 2nd as disrespect- actually think the disrespect might be towards tulane who returns more than memphis...houston preseason #1 is obvious
- kao defensively is off the charts
- feels lomax is the best defensive guard in the country
- thinks nolley is an elite shooter - aware the team lost some shooting, not as good as last year, but doesnt think they are as bad as some of the media portrays it and the current players want to make a statement of that
- a TON of assists in their scrimmage
- really older teams is extremely beneficial - was easier coaching this year

-kendric- "its just predictions and predictions always end up wrong" when asked about sasser being the Preseason POY-
- deandre says his role is the same as last year.. kendric says no it isnt- he is going to do way more this year.. he will score way more

Cincinnati
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al1KPCKA_ss

-the roster last year couldn't run his defense, this roster will be able to
- not just better because of new players, better because returners got better
- nolley brings in scoring, better play maker than you'd expect.. will be used differently than was used at memphis

Newman reemphasizes how extremely good of a passer nolley is and that was surprising. say rob is elite defender, kalu is a beast & can play some at the perimeter

Tulane (the only team suited out)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NufTh6LUzEA

- says we have a really good team, thinks they can win today! "the only weakness of the team is the coach" according to hunter . team is built to win
- hard to double anyone on tulane
- sion james is the what makes tulane run
- both tulane transfers have been impressive would have started at any other tulane team but tulane is so good they arent projected starters (note one of them was a starter from Georgetown)

players think they are extremely big, are about to have a big year, no jealousy on team..

ucf
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mamDqHdARA

- dawkins think this team is special (doesnt define that)
- objective this year is to be the best defense in the nation
- cj walker leader, hoping for big darius johnson year
- ucf players think taylor hendrix (Their top 60 recruit) is special

tulsa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPDARh3rUwY

doesnt really say anything beside generic coach talking point (cluture, hard work, play defense)

Sam Griffin was asked the hardest guard to defend, he said none he can defend all of them, none were hard to guard

It is a nonsensical accolade, IMO. Davis is far from an AAC Newcomer.

Thanks for the summary. The most surprising item I heard is Kao's offensive improvement (e.g., could "shock" some people). This is the time for unbridled optimism, but it is heartening to hear nevertheless and I hope at least it contains a kernel of truth.

SMU coach presser
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yozbWk1cFJI

- aware the team lacks a true PG but still feels good about roster
- didn't want to coach son, but they feel they can make it work
- has big expectations for Samuel Williamson -- will play 3/4 in a point forward type role
- zhuric phelps not a true pg but likely PG1 - can do it all

Great find, thanks. Like so many before him, basketball has proven a life line.

Reports state he is the fastest player on the team. He has much upside, but his body presently is not built for the physicality of D-1 basketball and certainly not for teams like Houston. It will be interesting seeing how the coaching staff maximizes his abilities and mitigates his liabilities.
