...for sanctions evasion and obstruction of justice.
Quote:Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York and Michael J. Driscoll, Assistant Director-in-Charge of the New York Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”), announced today the unsealing of an Indictment charging OLEG VLADIMIROVICH DERIPASKA, a/k/a “Oleg Mukhamedshin,” and NATALIA MIKHAYLOVNA BARDAKOVA, a/k/a “Natalya Mikhaylovna Bardakova,” citizens of the Russian Federation (“Russia”), and OLGA SHRIKI, a New Jersey resident and naturalized U.S. Citizen, with conspiring to violate United States sanctions imposed on DERIPASKA and one of DERIPASKA’s corporate entities, “Basic Element.” SHRIKI is further charged with obstruction of justice based on her deletion of electronic records relating to her participation in DERIPASKA’s sanctions evasion scheme following receipt of a Grand Jury subpoena requiring the production of those records. BARDAKOVA and is charged in one count with making false statements to agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Additionally, EKATERINA OLEGOVNA VORONINA, a/k/a “Ekaterina Lobanova,” is also charged with making false statements to agents of the Department of Homeland Security at the time of VORONINA’s attempted entry into the United States for the purpose of giving birth to DERIPASKA’s child. SHRIKI was arrested this morning.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said: “The indictment unsealed today signals the United States’ ongoing support for the people of Ukraine in the face of continued Russian belligerence. The enforcement of sanctions is a vital tool wielded by this Office and our law enforcement partners as we seek to deter Russian aggression, and today’s indictment should be taken as a warning that, try as they might, individuals violating these sanctions will be held accountable.”
I'm a little disappointed that someone didn't return after being shown the err of his ways to be called a moron, clown, or for the link to be disputed cause it wasn't Raw Story..
Paul Manafort is a name I haven’t thought of in a long time. So many memories …
the FBI raiding Manafort’s home in July 2017… getting indicted/arrested in October. Having his bond revoked in June 2018 … his co-defendant Rick Gates (remember him? LOL) pleading guilty in February 2018, testifying against Manafort at trial, getting absolutely destroyed on cross examination… being convicted in August of that year (on charges that the Obama DOJ had considered back in 2014/15, but had chosen not to indict)… serving ~23 months in prison, remaining in custody until being released (Covid) in May 2020.
But more than any of that, what I remember most of all is how the media absolutely salivated over every detail of Manafort’s proceedings, breathlessly telling us — over and over and over again, year after year — that Manafort was cooperating with Mueller, that Trump would be next, that today was a turning point, that the walls were closing in, etc. And in the end, it all amounted to …nothing.
As to Manafort himself, I confess mixed feelings. On one hand, it is genuinely destabilizing for the country when the power of Federal prosecutions target people for political reasons. On the other hand, Manafort is undeniably a swamp creature, and from the deepest, darkest, most rancid part of the swamp, at that. In truth, the whole reason Manafort was ever a part of Trump-world in the first place was to serve as a kind of ambassador/ liaison between the Swamp and MAGA. Seeing what happened to him, there’s a lesson to be learned there.
