I just wish Dana, Calkins, Parrish or anyone would write the whole story including Cal meeting with UK officials in Chicago prior to the Missouri game. Had we won the Missouri game, Kentucky, didn't have time to wait. Same was offered to Tom Izzo but he upset Louisville so they moved on to Cal.

Just so that we finally got to Penny, I'll take it. All's well that ends well.

He lost that game on purpose so he could go on to his dream job and no one will EVER be able convince me otherwise.

That’s silly. The deal was done way before that. He woulda tanked the Maryland game if all that is true. Some of you really need to take the tin foil hat off

I know you're ready to dismiss anything related to this story but if you follow the timeline, they were after coach Izzo (who had given them a silent confirmation) but he didn't sell out his current team and coached them to upset Louisville and on to the next round. Kentucky then turned their sites to Cal (after the Maryland game or whatever game you are referring to). Btw. Do you recall Cal trying to get tossed in the first 5-10 minutes of them game?

The deal was done before the CUSA tournament. A Kentucky guy even called the postgame radio show. Matt Dillon was tongue tied. Plus I had several people tell me it was a done deal. It pissed me off at the time because I was trying to enjoy the season. Calipari himself all year keep uttering the phrase “enjoy the ride because when it’s over it’s over”. But hey if it makes you feel better than he threw a game then keep believing it. Just like the people that say Kirk threw the Nova game in 85. Did Dana pay the refs off to foul Lee and Bedford out too? What is it with Memphis fans ? We also think Fuente tanked the Temple game in 2015. Did Norvell also tank it in 2019? Good grief smh

And they were never after Izzo. They had talked to Billy D but he quickly turned them down. They zeroed on Cal early

It's funny. Cal went against Billy Gillispie at TAMU in the 2007 NCAA. I told a UK buddy that the loser of that game would probably be his next coach. Cal won, Billy G lost and got hired at UK. Cal wanted the job then. You know that he made a mental note of how that went down. Then it's not a big leap to think that he would not make the mistake of winning and advancing the next time.

at my grandmothers funeral, on February 16, 2008
my kentucky cousins (who are kentucky basketball season tickets holders)
said that their ad and cal had met in dallas to discuss him coming to kentucky
and it was a done deal

they were already claiming all the recruits

(and i said cal would not leave because he loved memphis,

Good looking into the "way back" machine. Those times were wild.

I respectfully disagree on the Izzo part. This one is more rumor based with a clear connection from Izzo himself. There are more definitive articles that he was offered before Cal but they are behind pay walls.

he interviewed with UK officials before that game was played.
I read about it on pro UK site, not long after moving to Madisonville, KY in 2009.
He went on a media -barn blitz scross the state tour, always complaining how Memphis had 'made' him sell tickets.
Something he wouldn't have to do at UK.

When I wrote back to them about what crummy college would hire a coach whose team was about to play in the Sweet 16 the week they said they had met (Uk officials with Cal), the story disappeared off of their website.

I don't think Cal intentionally threw the game, but I think it's reasonable to conclude that if he knew KY was happening, his mind was not on Memphis and he just mailing it in. Definitely was a good read by Dana O'Neil.

I can never be convinced that he did not throw the game. I'm sure the players played their hardest, but the coaching wasn't there to win the game.

Most of their coaches have underachieved. Joe B only had 1 title. Pitino only had 1 there. Tubby got one in his first year. Rupp had 4 but he was there 40 years.

Pitino left for $70M contract with a team called the Boston Celtics. Tubby sat on the bench for Pitino's (would be) 2nd Natty at UK. If Pitino had stayed at Kentucky, LOOK OUT! Glad he didn't, btw! Pitino is the best coach I've ever seen. He preps his players well. they develop. They unite as 1. He motivates extremely well. He has great command of his team. And he understands the game and makes great adjustments in-game. A Pitino team always has a chance.

Joe B Hall was similar to Cal. Brought in excellent talent that left looking the same as they had arrived, not well developed in basketball skill or knowledge. Both highlyu skilled at managing the personalities of big name, high-profile players. MUCH easier in Hall's day vs Cal's.

Side note: I DO NOT LIKE KENTUCKY, but boy I sure wish we "underachieved" like them.

It’s not easy to integrate high caliber talent and their families/handlers into a highly functioning team.

Pitino would have won 4 titles had he stayed longer. He wasn't there that long and took over the program on heavy probation.

I suspect he has regretted walking away from that job for decades.

It would be interesting to hear interviews from the players about what Cal was like for that game... I'll certainly always question it too, but him just not caring about that game makes the most logical sense.
