I hope we watch our back closely. The NCAA doesn’t forgive and doesn’t forget and I’m sure they would love to return the favor in the near future.

For once I don't see the NCAA holding a grudge on this one. The IARP is gone. The IARP did this. The NCAA can bury this and move on, and I think that is exactly what they want to do. Penny is too shining an example for them to lose.

It didn't hurt that David Rudd went after them so hard for how they were going to try and screw us over tho.

Rudd is low-key fire on Twitter right now too...

The best part of this is how super aggressive and defiant we were with them. We called them out on all the bull**** and hypocrisy of the sham process, didn't cooperate, and told them to go screw themselves. We would have been admitting guilt, apologizing and would have had a 3 year ban with RC, Shirley and Gene Simmons.

Thank God Rudd handled it. Can you imagine if RC clone, Veatch would have had anything to do with it? He was basically telling Griffin that we deserved the death penalty.

I think it's possible our adamant and aggressive response to their aggressive investigation is what sealed the fate of the IARP altogether. Maybe some people who were on the NCAA reform committee actually had good intentions - like Condy Rice - and the IARP were supposed to be a step in the right direction. Then our sunlight on the process showed it was an abysmal failure.

I dunno, possible?

That would be a welcome change. Hard to know, maybe more insight will come out over time. Also, how the other IARP cases play out may provide some insight into whether this light penalty is specific to our case or will be across all of these cases even though they are much different in nature.

I have thought a lot about Rice, especially since the ruling came out. Any publicity would have exposed the whole thing as a sham; it would have been a complete disaster for the NCAA on every level. It would have also been a black coach getting clobbered, along with a string of black assistant coaches getting clobbered during the FBI sting, while a bunch of white coaches skated for infractions literally hundreds of times worse. Aside from Sean Miller, everyone that got it was black. You had Pearl, Coach K, Self, Gottfried, etc., getting off scot free.

Feels like the life time score is NCAA 35 Tigers 7... but we are on our way to a great comeback.

And todays decision does nothing to change our risk profile with the NCAA. We were a target before and we are now and we will always be.

Incredible news for the University. We could not have hoped for a more favorable outcome.

I cannot wait for the "30 For 30" to come out on the IARP in a few years...

Or if we still had that female lawyer (Sheryl Lipman?) who defended us in the Derick Rose fiasco.

Good. The NCAA's ego pushed this way further than it had to go. They messed up and then tried to punish us for their mistake. And on top of that based on their own rules, if Penny had did the exact same thing for Wiseman's family about two or three years earlier it would have been ok. Just an asinine situation.

Amen. Very pleasantly surprised and so happy that chapter is complete. I don't know that I'd say Memphis "beat" the NCAA, though. They were holding the cards and could've (unjustly) caused a lot more harm than they already did for the past few years.

The ncaa is basically done with the NIL deal where we can all cheat legally. The blue bloods are the ones that are upset because they lost their deal. And after what North Carolina got away with they should never ever penalize anyone again

If anything is ever worthy of air-quotes, it's "defended".

RE: WE BEAT THE NCAA!!!!
Key point in report is the IARP lumping the Wiseman payment into the same group of contributions Penny has made in the community in years past.

Would have loved to been a fly on the wall to see the discussion that led to that pathway.

But when they headed down that path the entire case fell apart since the payments were no longer considered extra benefits.

Our defense had nothing to do with outcome of the Rose investigation. The moment the testing center invalidated Rose's test, Perry Mason couldn't have changed the outcome. Technically the official position of the NCAA is that Rose did take his own test.

Not a single person put forth that line of defense.

You certainly didn't.

That is what makes the ruling so interesting.

Especially since Wiseman wasn't part of the community at the time.
